The Big Concrete Lorry is one of Shirley Hughes's Tales From Trotter Street, each story works as a stand alone but includes characters from the other stories, thus they can be read individually or you can enjoy the way they interlink, my children enjoy spotting characters from the other books in the illustrations. In this story the Pattersons are running out of room and decide to build an extension, the concrete is delivered too early and starts setting in the street, all the neighbours rally together to help the family shift the concrete before it is too late, which they just about manage to do. It doesn't sound the most gripping plot in the world but as usual Shirley Hughes manages to capture events from the child's perspective and the boys in this tale are delighted to watch the lorry at work and even more delighted to be left with a small mound of hardened concrete they can run their cars up and down. To celebrate the building of the new extension the Pattersons hold a party and invite all the friends and neighbours who helped. Shirely Hughes portrays an urban multi-ethnic world, where people don't seem to have much money, but communities pull together and there is a lot of love around. I simply adore her books. The other titles in the series are Wheels, Angel Mae and The Snow Lady.
