Product Description

Theology matters! At last it can be understood easily, thanks to this “layman's language” approach to biblical belief. Authored by J. I. Packer, one of the premier theologians of Christianity, this summary of Christian teaching covers nearly 100 major Christian beliefs from a Reformed perspective. Brief, easy-to-understand chapters offer precise descriptions without sacrificing depth. Thoughtfully arranged and refreshingly readable, this is a book that belongs on the shelf of every Christian.

Synopsis

This exposition of the Christian faith relates biblical truth to daily life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference! 4 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This book is well suited for individual or small group study (I have done both). It has about 90 short chapters (2-4 pages each) of essential Christian doctrines, and is written from a Reformed perspective. Packer's writing style is straightforward, concise, and intended to be read by anyone. He includes numerous scripture references to support each of the doctrines, and I have found it useful to read a chapter and then spend up to an hour reading all of the related scripture references.
Sample topics include: Revelation (Scripture is the Word of God), Predestination (God has a purpose), Trinity (God is one and three), Holiness (God is Light), Conscience (God teaches and cleanses the heart), Incarnation, Virgin Birth, Repentance, Elders, Lord's Supper, Marriage, the Family, Second Coming, Heaven, Hell and many others.
Again, each chapter emphasizes why the doctrine is important for us to know - e.g., what difference it should make in our life. This book is wonde! rful for strengthening your faith and beliefs - helping you know why you believe what you believe, always based on the Bible.
May God bless you through this work as much as He has blessed me.....

A previous reviewer complains that the sub-title of this fine book is misleading, because it does not deal with the historical development of Christian doctrine.

But Packer does not set out to write a guide to 'historical' theology, but rather a summary of 'historic' theology. And that's a rather different aim. By 'historic Christian beliefs', he means the 'classic mainstream' beliefs as set out in the Westminster Confession and similar documents. Packer has written a number of books on 'historical' theology, but this is not one of them.

Behind this attention to post-Reformation doctrinal standards is a determination to read theology out of Scripture, rather than merely out of the seething mass of human speculation and opinion.

Packer has achieved his aim superbly well. I know of no other book which provides such a clear summary of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. Packer was (and is) an exceptionally fine scholar, and brings great learning and wisdom to his task.

Then again, this book is simple, but not simplistic. I like what Packer says about this in his preface:-

'Remembering that the Lord Jesus Christ called those he wanted fed "sheep" rather than "giraffes", I have aimed to keep things as simple as possible. Archbishop William Temple was once told that he had made a complex issue very simple; he was hugely delighted, and said at once: "Lord, who made me simple, make me simpler yet." My heart goes with Temple's, and I have tried to keep my head in line with it.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Readable theology 18 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Books on theology are usually very large and need a lot of dedicated time to absorb. Jim Packer's Concise Theology is exactly what it says. Many theological topics are each covered in an authoritative concise readable form, covering 2 or 3 pages each. Very useful for those new to teaching or preaching or those looking for a summary that has clarity that can be handed to others in personal conversation, sermons, Bible Studies etc.. It is really "your starter for 10".

5.0 out of 5 stars THE TITLE DOESN'T LIE 29 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A huge breadth of subject matter treated in such a way as to make it readily accessible to the ordinary (if there is such a description) reader. The author's writing style flows, is logical, informative, and conclusive.
