An excellent aid, 21 May 2003
Format:Hardcover
As a student, I found this an indispensable guide. It has all the words that one could possibly want (I'm reading Les Misérables in French, and I haven't found a word that isn't in this dictionary yet), plus some that you will probably never need (the french for brat is marmot... I found that rather amusing). In conclusion, if you need a dictionary to help you with French, but are sick with the crudeness of smaller dictionaries, then get this.

My wife wanted a "better than pocket dictionary" for the forthcoming trip to France, as we were taking posession of a newly bought house and wanted to speak and write more than holiday french. I like a good dictionary but how can it help your french particularly? With real life examples, similar to a phrase book but with the authority and ranking of meanings of a dictionary. It is also clearly laid out, easy to read and too big to go in your pocket. However, it is A5 size so goes in a bag easily if needed. We are so pleased we bought a second to stay in France.

A really USEFUL dictionary!

Have not been unable to find a word that i need.

Has "Guide to Effective Communication" containing:

1. various examples of letters for all situations (inc. holidays, personal and social, business, seeking of employment and world of work)

2. french link words and expressions (i find this section particularly useful)

3. notes on/examples of french ads

4. some [everyday/common] useful words on the internet and emails.

THESE SECTIONS HAVE BOTH FRENCH AND ENGLISH EXAMPLES.

Has tables of how to conjugate regular verbs with tables of conjugated irregular french verbs.

There are also a smaller number of tables of irregular english verbs but this would not be adequate for a French person learning English.

Highly recommendable for all situations for the English-speaking learning French, less useful for French learning English.
