The CD was delivered on time and installed easily on my hard drive running Windows 7 64 bit. I contacted Oxford Press to check if there were any issues with Windows 7 and they reassured me. It had not been clear on Amazon site.

Amazon wanted to charge me the postage rate for a book, which was quite expensive, even though I was only buying a CD. The rate for a CD is normally quite low as it comes in an envelope, not a package. However it seems that because this CD is in the " books " department it gets loaded with the postage cost of a book. That seems to be a silly reason for ripping off the customer. I had to buy another item to put the total over the free delivery limit in order to avoid paying the heavy book postage rate on the CD.

So unclear description on Amazon and rip-off delivery charge because the CD is treated as a heavy book from the book department.
Because of that I am very unhappy with Amazon but the dictionary works on my PC.

One small niggle with the dictionary window on the screen. The software does not remember all the settings of the window. The left hand pane which contains the list of words is very narrow so you must widen it to show long words fully. When you close the window and reopen it later you get the narrow version again. Everything else is remembered e.g. contrast etc but not the pane width. Insufficient testing and poor attention to detail. It hit me within seconds of using the dictionary for the first time so the programmer and the tester were asleep !

Many moons ago I had The first version of this dictionary with sound. Sadly that early version did not have compatability with my XP64, and now didnt work with Windows 7. Getting a new edition was great. Difficult words, explanations and pronuciation are top line.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary - 12th Edition on CD-ROM version 1.0 is a GREAT piece of technology for your computer. It includes, 240,000 words, phrases and definitions with 50,000 spoken audio pronunciation. The latter, it very helpful, just click the audio icon and one of a number of voices will give the correct pronunciation.

It is easy to install, though follow the instruction carefully which includes leaving the CD-ROM inside the CDR-drive for when you use the dictionary for the first time only. There is a useful contrast button which changes the background and text colour. You can also increase or decrease the size of the font of the word definition. The dictionary is also predictive in that as you type the nearest available words appears and as you add more letters, different words appear.

A clever and educational feature is the Lost for Words - just click on it and a word and its definition appears - a random calculus of 240,000 words etc. mean you will be learning something new everyday, however each time you open the programme a new word and its definition appears. Downside, this dictionary does not have an icon at the bottom of the computer like other programmes have and no Thesaurus and I do no mean a dinosaur! There is also and Anagram and Crossword Puzzle Solver.

A GREAT piece of technology for your computer
