A classic 30 Nov. 2013

This book scarcely needs a review; if you know about, it's because you're already interested in the subject. English place names are fascinating to anyone interested in language. Here is history; Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and Roman names, sometimes twisted out of all recognition by time and changing speech-patterns, but still traceable by an expert such as Ekwall. Don't expect to be spoon-fed, though; he takes it for granted that you know how to use the book, and you won't find some of the more recent inventions.
A book for serious study, or a book for browsing in. You choose.
Useful and informative 21 July 2014

The edition I used to own had my village listed - this one didn't, which I thought was odd... Nevertheless a useful book.
