Product Description

Product Description

Completely revised and up to date, this concise version of the 4th edition of "The Oxford Companion to the Theatre" is an accessible handbook for the theatre-goer or drama student. In addition to covering all aspects of theatre worldwide, it includes entries on a vast range of theatrical styles, dramatists, performers and directors, as well as information on theatres, festivals and such technical topics as lighting, sound and method acting. Covering the great names of theatre throughout the ages, the editors have brought the dramatis personae up to date with entries on Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Athol Fugard, as well as providing information on many people, places and companies not previously included in the work.

This book purports to 'provide authoritative coverage of the theatre past and present.' Certainly, it contains comprehensive and useful information relating to 'theatre past'; but its coverage of 'theatre present' leaves something to be desired. There are a number of glaring omissions with regard to contemporary theatre, but perhaps the most perplexing is that the book appears to have no entry relating to Steven Berkoff. Whilst I might not agree with all of Berkoff's ideas on theatre, I would suggest that his dynamic approach to drama has had a significant effect on the contemporary theatrical scene, and certainly warrants inclusion. It would seem that Berkoff is the ghost of theatre present . . . then again, he would probably quite enjoy that.
