This book purports to 'provide authoritative coverage of the theatre past and present.' Certainly, it contains comprehensive and useful information relating to 'theatre past'; but its coverage of 'theatre present' leaves something to be desired. There are a number of glaring omissions with regard to contemporary theatre, but perhaps the most perplexing is that the book appears to have no entry relating to Steven Berkoff. Whilst I might not agree with all of Berkoff's ideas on theatre, I would suggest that his dynamic approach to drama has had a significant effect on the contemporary theatrical scene, and certainly warrants inclusion. It would seem that Berkoff is the ghost of theatre present . . . then again, he would probably quite enjoy that.
