As one would expect, it lists 285 plates, 27 in colour, on the cover of this 300 page book outlining the beginning of photography from the camera obscura to the modern era (1960s). Its opening quotation from the Latin inscription on the Brunswick Thaler (1589) is an indication of the writers' approach and sensitivity to photography: "Of what use are lens and light / To those who lack mind and sight?" - a thoughtful reminder to us in this digital age.
Beginning with the development of the technical and photochemical evolution on paper, metal, glass and film, they explore in a very interesting way the science of photography before they consider the artistic achievements of a wide range of photographers. In this 300 page book, the writing is tight and well-illustrated with a varied range of photographs, many of which are the classics everyone interested in photography recognises. All in all, an enjoyable, informative and interesting book.
Recommended - at the cheaper price - just for the pictures!
