Product Description

Review

'At long last here is an accessible, sensible, learned and digestible history of Australia. It is a triumph of Stuart Macintyre's notable scholarship that he has come up with a book that is concise - not brief, not abbreviated - sharp and to the point ... this is a tremendously useful tool for locals and outsiders. It should sit on every Australian's bookshelf, next to the dictionary and the atlas.' Nick Richardson, Herald-Sun 'It's a splendid piece of work and it belongs to a noble tradition ... It conveys throughout a joy in writing history, in mastering the detail of the past - a joy especially in struggling with the soul of the country.' Alan Atkinson, Sydney Morning Herald 'Macintyre's book is the best short history of Australia since Manning Clark's classic of 1963.' Times Literary Supplement

Interesting read! 2 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm not mad on historical books ordinarily but I bought this book for my Dad and had a nose through it before giving it to him. I found it hard to put down and in the end read some big chunks of it before handing it over. The pictures throughout are great and the book is written in a very accessible way. I'm looking forward to my Dad reading it so I can steal it back and read the rest of it myself!

Informative 20 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
A well balanced and informative account of the history of Australia in one volume. In may ways this work leaves room for inquisitive exploration outside of this volume by the reader, rather than make a hash of it within a book of this size: thereby concentrating the focus of inquiry on exactly what is fundamentally important to know.
If you want a scholarly and comprehensive articulation of Australia, look no further. If you are looking for a narrative with interesting tidbits - this isn't for you.
In a nutshell, great value for money. The only 'history' of Australia I'll ever need.

For a seminar I needed some fundamental information about Australian history, and I am very glad that I have discovered Stuart Macintyre's "Concise History"! The book provides solid information and is enjoyable to read. It addresses the needs of people who know nothing about Australia, but I guess it is also a useful reference book for those who are already somewhat familiar with the Continent's history. The book begins at the beginning (1770) and provides information up to our day and age. It is well structured. The author tries to be as unbiased as possible (he succeeds) and does address touchy issues, such as the changing but still difficult relationship between the aborigines and those who came later and the attitude to immigrants ("Whites, please!"). For all the quotations, sources are mentioned, and the "Guide to further reading" is good and comprehensive. A book well worth reading.
