5.0 out of 5 stars Never been bettered 21 Dec 2004
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this out of curiosity having heard how good the old Living Stereo recordings were. They were recorded with just 2 or 3 omnidirectional mikes, straight with no mixing or tweaking.
Well its all true. 1955 recording and transferred direct to SACD from the original master tape. The sound quality & stereo image is breathtaking.
Seems recording has only gone downhill from then. Could it have been the all valve recording process?

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Vivid Performances! 22 Nov 2008
By Scriabinmahler TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Reiner's classic account of Bartok's two major works still sounds incredibly vivid and incandescent. This recording is a living document of how gloriously alive music making was at the time and how dull and dead we've all become nowadays in contrast.

50s' stereo sound has amazing presence and reality of each instrument, occasionally tutti sections cause breaking noise and distortion though. But who cares, if the music is played with such vitality! Check also Reiner's unbelievably eloquent Pathetique Symphony and R.Strauss Symphonic Poems;

Reiner conducts Tchaikovsky
Strauss: Tod und Verklärung; Sinfonia Domestica
Strauss:Also Sprach Zarathustra
Brahms/Dvorak/R Strauss: Orchestral Works
