4.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting, Fond Farewell To A Genial Genius 10 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This brand new 'studio' version of Jon Lord's infamous Concerto For Group And Orchestra is a fine finale to the great man's truly remarkable musical career, which has effectively gone full circle.

Considerable thought has gone into the packaging, with explanatory notes and a warm tribute from conductor Paul Mann and Jon's family. There are also photographs of the rehearsals / recording sessions. The fact that Jon approved the final mix shortly before he left us makes it all the more poignant.

The orchestral arrangements, courtesy of Paul Mann and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra this time, are virtually identical to the live performances in 1999 (as captured on the Deep Purple Live At The Royal Albert Hall album, which in turn was only a little different to the original live performances on the corresponding 1969 album) so don't expect any great changes. Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson does a fine job on the brief lead vocals (2nd movement) with Steve Balsamo and Kasia Laska providing backing vocals. The drum / percussion solo break is thankfully brief.

I would have preferred one guitarist throughout for consistency / progression, but instead we have a different guitarist for each of the three movements, each with a different tone / style (Darin Vasilev, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Morse). The contrast between the quiet sections (i.e. the sensitive strings) and the louder parts (i.e. the brash band) had me adjusting the volume rather too much, but I guess the composer was illustrating the contrasting styles, especially in the first two movements !

It is a measure of Jon's immense talent that that he could compose such a concerto at a relatively young age and that it still resonates beautifully today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jon Lord 1 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD is brilliance from an amazing musician who will be dearly missed.
The man was a genius in his field. The music is fantastic. I recommend the following.
1. Pour a glass of nice wine
2. Sit back with said glass of wine in hand.
3. Headphones on and press play.
It will be the most relaxing time you will have

RIP Mr Lord

It's a sad day, when you get to hear some great music and realise you'll never be able to see it performed live. May God rest your soul Jon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely re-done! 13 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a very good version of Jon Lords Concerto, he brought in a variety of musicians who gel together very well. Sadly Jon passed away soon after finishing it, but at least he went out on a high.

2.0 out of 5 stars Concerto for G&O 10 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Music was great but the dissapointment was the 'bonus DVD' which I expected to be video footage of the recording not another version of the same music in 5.3 (no video)

This is absolutely brilliant, every aspect works and Bruce Dickinson is a revelation [as part of a brave move to keep most of the other erstwhile members of Deep Purple away from proceedings]... So glad that the original score was recreated and transcribed... Proves without doubt to the classical purists that you don't have to be 150 years old [or dead, or both] to write 'proper' music these days...

Having enjoyed Jon's concert in the Albert Hall immensely, I thought a "2012" production will have us riveted. I was sadly mistaken. I have waited weeks for it to arrive. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as good as the original
This is a fine recording, nicely crafted and beautifully played but for me it just doesn't have the same impact or togetherness that the original 1969 recording had. Read more
