BBC Review

Increasing status means that the venues that Portuguese fado singer Mariza inhabits have become increasingly grandiose; ending up with the Royal Albert Hall during the 2006 Atlantic Waves festival.

This live set was recorded down in Portugal, outdoors in front of what looks like a massive gathering, with Mariza's regular band surrounded by the Sinfonietta De Lisboa. The Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum conducts, cloaking the normally folksy fado core with a lushly romantic string sweetness.

Sometimes it seems as though Mariza's presentation is becoming increasingly smooth, but the power and naturalness of her onstage bearing tends to save her from any accusations of blandness.

Nevertheless, this is a potential trap for the future.

This disc acts as a prime document of Mariza's recent stage set, and there's a complementary DVD available too. She clearly relishes the opportunity for an epic sweep, and it's good to hear the Portuguese guitar of Luis Guerreiro refusing to get lost in the mix. The stiff-backed clap-along of the audience can become a tad annoying, though.

"Duas Lagrimas De Orvalho" represents the height of syllable-rolling opportunity, with Mariza tripping and twisting, drawing out words and swishing them around with superb control.

Typically, the concert climaxes with "Primavera", her favourite song, and "O Gente Da Minha Terra", a classic Amalia Rodrigues number. --Martin Longley

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariza Mia Bella 27 Nov 2006

A great CD from an accomplished Fadista - but the DVD will add a great deal to the pleasure. If you cannot watch the DVD [reviews of the DVD have been posted on Amazon] - this is still a must-have CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen and then buy the DVD 13 Nov 2006

Fans of Mariza have been waiting for a live concert CD, and this one comes from what seemingly was a wonderful night in Belem. 'Barco Negro' and 'Quando me sinto so' appear on the DVD but are omitted from the CD. However, with 16 tracks who's complaining. The recording is excellent with great presence in the voice. You won't be disappointed but you will want the DVD too.

this concert is awe inspiring music. As Fadistas go she is wonderful. I first found Mariza on late night SBS multi-cultural television in downtown Adelaide South Australia. I was glued to the set and knew I had to buy her CD. I have now started collecting this wonderful inspired yourself listen to her and be amazed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid voice and a powerful performance 11 April 2012
By Henry.B
Format:Audio CD
Seeing a live performance of Mariza is one of my most precious memories, and so I wanted to have the recording of that exact concert.

It perfectly immortalized the atmosphere of that concert and the energy Mariza exudes, through all her fado songs.

One of my favourite songs is Ha uma musica do povo, mostly because I had a Portuguese friend translate the lyrics to me and tell me about the poet Fernando Pessoa whose poem was put to music.
A heartwrenching performance is O gente da minha terra, while a more uplifting and cheerful song is Feira de castro.

There is no song that doesn't stir with the emotions she sends through her powerful voice. And seeing her on stage makes you understand her and get closer still to the songs, and even to their meanings, if you don't speak much Portuguese.
