It's somewhat hard to imagine 250,000 people turning out to see Barclay James Harvest, but here is the living proof. Apparently the recording of this event was fraught with difficulty and after a certain amount of patching and salvage back in sunny Stockport, the original UK version featured 50 minutes or so of music. This 30th anniversary remaster by Esoteric restores 2 songs only previously found on the German version to give the most complete representation and some 13 extra minutes.
This is also newly `digipak'ed and comes with a new 20 page booklet telling the story of the most famous day in BJH history. It is a pity that original keyboard man Stuart `Woolly' Wolstenholme had departed the band the previous year and as the Eighties were upon us, the keyboard sounds were beginning to take on a digital sheen, but it still sounds pretty much like authentic BJH.
There are old classics here like the evergreen `Mockingbird', `Nova Lepidoptera', `Child Of The Universe' and an almighty closer `Hymn', alongside more recent material, giving a rounded 11 song souvenir of a very special night. Whilst it isn't quite up there with `Live Tapes' and was the third BJH live album in less than ten years, this definitive issue still has much to recommend it.
