Excellent read 5 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've taken a few gig photos in the past and received just enough positive feedback that I decided I wanted to know how to do it properly. I bought this book and was glad I did. The range of advice given is excellent, from how to shoot in small, badly lit venues, to large stadiums, through how to get into the photographers pit and all the way to guidance on how to post-process your photos. I read it cover to cover in a couple of days and plan to have a re-read soon. There are plenty of excellent photos to have a look at and each photo had an overview of the camera kit and settings used to learn from. The book is very well written but it wasn't until I saw one of his photos that looked familiar that I realised that I already owned another of his books (the Nikon D3100 Digital Field Guide) so I suppose that make me a fan :)

Finally! 10 Feb 2012
By Sara - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Finally, a book that deals with concert photography from a digital perspective! The few books that were available were hopelessly outdated. This book tells you how to shoot concerts in this day and age and deals with the pitfalls and practicality of digital cameras. Older books talked too much about film, which reacts WAY differently than digital camera sensors.

This book covers all of the different venues that you will come across on your journey to being a pro concert photographer, from bars to stadiums. It's easy to read and it's also full of photos for reference. Not only will you learn from this book, but it also makes a great coffee table book because of the pics of cool bands!

Concert and Live Music Photography covers all of the topics you've been wondering about, from what cameras and lenses to use, to dealing with the crazy lighting situations! It also tells you how to get in touch with the PR people and what to say to them. This is great advice because it lets you know how to talk to management like a pro, which improves your chances of getting a pass exponentially.

Bottom line is that this is the best book on music photography that you will find. It's got all the info you need and the guy that wrote the book is easy to understand and he's got the street cred too! Check out the stuff he's shot for Rolling Stone and SPIN!

If you want to get into music photography, but don't know where to start, BUY THIS BOOK. If you've been doing music photography for a while, but need a fresh perspective and some new pointers, BUY THIS BOOK! If you're just a fan of good pictures of musicians, BUY THIS BOOK!

Just what I was looking for!!!! 10 Feb 2012
By Ed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Wow! I've been waiting for a book like this. I've been trying my hand at concert photography and I've found that the learning curve is steep! The lighting is crappy and I haven't been able to find a book that actually walked you through the process and explained things so easily.

I'm glad the author included tips on shooting in bars because that's pretty much where I have to shoot until (hopefully) I start shooting the big time shows. This book pretty much takes you from shooting clubs all the way up to shooting stadiums. It's a great insiders view from starting out to when you get to the top.

It's also got a great section on post-processing. I had no idea about entering data about the pictures so that all of my copyright stuff and info about the band was in there. And it also tells you how to deal with the band management, which is something that most music photographers I've dealt with try to keep a secret. This book gives you all of the secret stuff and puts it right out there so you can get started easier.

Oh, and the pictures are pretty badass! There's all kinds of stuff, from punk to indie to country and even some blues and jazz dudes! It's got some sweet backstage shots that you don't see very often too. This book is just all-around cool even if you aren't a photographer and just want to see some nice pics.

Fantastic book! 22 Feb 2012
By Ken Bloch, Jr. - Published on Amazon.com

I have been shooting live music for about 6 months now and needed a little help. This book covers just about every situation you could find yourself in and has a solution for any problems. This book covers typical lighting situations in clubs, bars, arenas, and even the awful lighting that we face more often than not.

Another area that I needed help in was Processing and organization. I am now using the authors methods and have cut down on my processing time in half.

Reading this book will not make you a great photographer, only getting out there and doing will take care of that...however this book will give you the tools you need to be more confident and will answer those nagging questions in your head "Why didn't this come out the way I wanted it?" or "how would a true professional treat this situation?" Now we know.

You will no doubt have more confidence in what you are doing after you read this book. Shooting live music isn't easy, but it will be easier once you take the advice that Mr. Thomas.

You have all the answers and more, so take advantage of the tried and true method and take your photography to the next level and beyond.
