I enjoyed this DVD very much. It has two parts. The longest one is a live coverage of Procol's 2 performances in Denmark in 2006. The shorter one `Top of the Pops' like performance shot in the 1970s, it's hilarious.
The performance in Denmark is a mix of two concerts. One day the weather is brighter than the other day and sometimes some of the players get a little bit irritated because of the (hot) sun shining into their eyes, so soon the sweat is all over. But what a great performance anyhow and what great musicianship! Mention the bassist now playing with Procol. He wasn't born yet I think when Procol scored their great hits like Whiter Shade of Pale or A Salty Dog, never mind he does a great job. Same goes for the Hammond player. He really attacks his instrument with much pleasure. Brooker has a good voice (still) and sometimes he has a little bit a problem to cut through the mass of sound (from orchestra and band, for instance in Whaling Stories) but all goes well. Only now and then coordination between orchestra and band is a little behind but that's quibbling. The orchestra and band are separated by a battery of glass panels, I think that's to protect them from the mass of sound coming from the band. That means that the camera's have a little bit of a problem to get a good shot of an individual soloist now and then. The camera-positions are pretty fixed so there's not so much variation between all these shots. But when the orchestral percussionist hits the anvil everyone is impressed, so am I. Nice thing is that Procol - for me - plays some interesting and unknown repertoire. I've never heard Sympathy For The Hard Of Hearing, Something Magic, Into The Flood etc. played with orchestral accompaniment so that's also very enjoyable. The public is mainly 50+ and very enthusiastic. And the Danish Radio Choir is also very important even singing Latin texts with some of the songs.
The bonus, a Danish TV thing in which Procol performs 6 songs is really Back to the Future. I'd to laugh out really loud. We're very very cool in those days. We smoked, we drank lots of beer with enormous foam on it, looked weird with our very large pair of glasses, wore long beards to look older, smoked pipe at 22, yeh brother those were the days of protest still, of course now we are sitting very comfortable in Ledeborg Park listening to those Procol guys, cool too and all drive home with the stereo on. But those were the days.
