Product Description

Carine Defoort, University of Leuven, Belgium

"This book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of Chinese philosophy by an important scholar of philosophy in China."

Product Description

An introduction to Chinese philosophy and a reference tool for sinologists. Comments by important Chinese thinkers are arranged around 64 key concepts to illustrate their meaning and use through 25 centuries of Chinese philosophy. This guide was prepared by Zhang Dainian, one of China's most famous modern philosophers. Zhang reaches back to include concepts in use before the oracle bones (c.1350-1100 BC), what could be called a philosophical "prehistory". But the focus of the work is those concepts that gained currency in classical Chinese philosophy, especially those whose meanings are deeper and more difficult to grasp. Translated and edited by Edmund Ryden in consultation with the author, the book also includes helpful introductory commentary by Ryden for each section.

Not well formatted, but still a very useful work 1 Jun 2011
By Christopher J. Gait - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I would have given this work five stars, but to have such a carefully translated and well bound volume almost totally lacking in Chinese characters, at least for the key terms in the body of text (the titles have them), is disappointing. Having said that, it certainly deserves more than the one parsimonious star another reader gave it. There is a dearth of good translations in English of modern philosophers and historians of culture and philosophy like Zhang Dainian. It is really useful for an autodidact like myself to have this English text available. I plan to get a copy of the Chinese original to work through it. It is also good to see works reach the West from a materialist like Mr. Zhang, who loves traditional culture, and who suffered under the fanatics of the Cultural Revolution and continued on his path. There is a lot of blather written about the history of Chinese philosophy by westerners, and it's good to see works start to filter through from China that will introduce westerners to some of the inside views of the 'Four Treasuries'.
