[The Healers of Meligna is a 5 novel series. Book 4 will be released in November this year.]

"There was an illness much worse than anything I had ever seen, and that was the sickness of my country."

Adenine is blind and isolated in her small attic bedroom. Haunted by the recent deaths of her uncle and father, she is alone and afraid. Believing she is a carrier of the incurable Death Plague that ravished the lands twenty-five years ago, she never goes outside.

When her mother falls ill, Adenine begins to starve. Despite her terror of infecting others, she goes in search of the town's doctor. Friends are made, enemies are discovered and every secret unravels. Pursued by the country's exiled healers, Adenine's life now depends on who she trusts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just amazing 5 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Trigger Warning: This book contains a scene of sexual abuse.

I picked up my Kindle five times to read this, because each time I picked it up I found myself spending hours reading unable to stop until my battery died, which is why it took five sittings, not four.

It takes a bold writer to create a story in the first person. It takes an even bolder writer to place the first half of the novel in a single house, never going outside. But to make your main character blind is the most bold of all. She writes smells, and sounds, and textures amazingly well, describing how this blind girl gets around, the systems she uses to find her way, counting her paces, sizes of objects, placement of things she uses often. She builds this house around a girl who can't see, and makes you believe that this is possible.

The characters are really well-written, no generic cardboard characters here. Even the lesser characters have a personality about them, a life and vibrancy that makes them fit into the world. Characters have their good and bad points, they do kind acts, but make huge mistakes. Not even the main character is exempt from this, moving from moments of kindness, to naivety or selfishness. The characters are definitely the best point of this story, interesting people with interesting lives who make decisions that are in line with who they are.

Many lies and secrets perforate the story, with most of them being revealed from the end, some are fairly easy to figure out, but that is simply to bait you into complacency. When the more hidden truths get revealed, I was awed, as I never seen it coming.

This is a really well-written story, a lot of mystery and intrigue, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just fantastic! 12 Jun 2013
By Amber
Format:Kindle Edition
From the moment I picked up this book I was absolutely hooked!

I love the characters and how they are developed throughout the story. I literally couldn't put the book down as it continually makes you want to read on and find out what happens to everyone further into their stories.

There is a great sense of a huge history not only behind all of the characters but also to the world in which it is set making the possibilities for what else could be written endless.

I can't wait for the next one in this series!

The author is brilliant and i'm just about to start reading another story of hers "Bear Heart" which centres around one of the characters I was really intrigued by in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read 25 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well, what a book! There wasn't a single moment I thought to myself 'this chapter needs to hurry up' or 'when is the next exciting bit coming up', because it captured my attention the whole time. I sense this book is just a small snippet of a big adventure. I look forward to seeing if the author can pull at my heart string more than she already has. The book has really been an exciting and emotional journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concealed Power 23 Aug 2013

I usually read thrillers but after reading Magic Study and enjoying it, my son suggested I buy this book as he had read it himself and had been raving about it for days. I have to say it was brilliantly written, amazing story, I couldn't put it down and had it finished within 24 hours. Apparently the sequel is due out about now, which is why I am on Amazon. Bank holiday week-end so that is my holiday sorted!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read in this genre. 17 Mar 2014
By Araldia
Format:Kindle Edition
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading the opening chapters. There was a strong feeling something wasn't right, but it was hard to put a finger on it. It turns out that the author is very adept at setting the scene for later parts of the story with breadcrumbs through the book.
I have no doubt if I were to read the book again I would notice even more hidden details that linke through to make the story arc just that little bit more special than is normal in this genre.
Although the book does touch on sexual abuse matters and violent crime, it does so with a compassion and complexity that challenges the binary viewpoints of good and bad.
I laughed, I cried, I stayed up till 5 am several nights in a row to get through this book. The main character Adenine is introduced to us as a girl of ten, and the book spans the four years leading up to the day before her 14th birthday. It covers parental sacrifice, and the issues surrounding 'doing the best we can' regardless of legality or morality as judged by a surrounding populace.
It brings to the fore attitudes of judgement and conviction based purely on stereotypical issues and appearances, and challenges the reader to step outside of their comfort zone to identify with the protagonists.
I can not wait to read the next book in the series. Overall a very powerful and gripping tale with well developed characters and interesting perspectives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read! 29 Oct 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book and the following ones in the series are a great investment of your reading time. The characters are complex and well developed as the story progresses. Lots if original ideas here and a world described so well yet without over describing, so that you feel immersed in the world without any sense of losing the feeling if the characters' story. Compelling and heart rending without any over-sentimentality.
