No matter how hard Raine Benares tries, she just can't keep out of trouble. First it came from being part of the most notorious elven family out there - pirates and thieves all - then she got bonded to a soul-stealing rock. And those were the good old days. Since then she's battled demons, homicidal maniacs, death-bringing Reapers, ancient goblins and disgruntled spooks, but the same old problems just won't go away.
So since fighting the good fight hasn't helped her shake any of her enemies off, it's time to hit back. Creatively. Some days it's good to be a Benares and there are some powers in the world that even a soul-sucking rock can't wield.
Yup, Raine is back in her fifth adventure (
Magic Lost, Trouble Found,
Armed and Magical,
The Trouble with Demons,
Bewitched & Betrayed) and this time it's financial. For the most part things are the same as before - still on the Isle of Mid, still trying to avoid arrest by the Elven embassy or kidnap by the goblins, and most importantly of all trying to retain control of the Saghred without it taking control of her. Simple.
True, we've been here before with Raine, and for the most part the elves have no new threats to offer. Luckily the goblins continue in their tricky, underhand ways, providing plenty of dangerous variety. Prepare for plenty of action, intrigue and difficult situations as Raine's ingenuity is once more stretched to the limit.
Luckily for her lots of old friends are around to help out, and a couple of new faces - particularly her cousin Mago, who is a typical Benares with untypical methods.
By now fans of this series know what to expect. So even if the love triangle has been resolved, there's still plenty of swash for your buckle, magic aplenty, a couple of monsters, lots of subterfuge, some kidnappings, rescues and numerous moments of peril. Not to mention wit, sarcasm and the occasional romantic interlude. Fun throughout.
