No matter how hard Raine Benares tries, she just can't keep out of trouble. First it came from being part of the most notorious elven family out there - pirates and thieves all - then she got bonded to a soul-stealing rock. And those were the good old days. Since then she's battled demons, homicidal maniacs, death-bringing Reapers, ancient goblins and disgruntled spooks, but the same old problems just won't go away.

So since fighting the good fight hasn't helped her shake any of her enemies off, it's time to hit back. Creatively. Some days it's good to be a Benares and there are some powers in the world that even a soul-sucking rock can't wield.

Yup, Raine is back in her fifth adventure (Magic Lost, Trouble Found, Armed and Magical, The Trouble with Demons, Bewitched & Betrayed) and this time it's financial. For the most part things are the same as before - still on the Isle of Mid, still trying to avoid arrest by the Elven embassy or kidnap by the goblins, and most importantly of all trying to retain control of the Saghred without it taking control of her. Simple.

True, we've been here before with Raine, and for the most part the elves have no new threats to offer. Luckily the goblins continue in their tricky, underhand ways, providing plenty of dangerous variety. Prepare for plenty of action, intrigue and difficult situations as Raine's ingenuity is once more stretched to the limit.

Luckily for her lots of old friends are around to help out, and a couple of new faces - particularly her cousin Mago, who is a typical Benares with untypical methods.

By now fans of this series know what to expect. So even if the love triangle has been resolved, there's still plenty of swash for your buckle, magic aplenty, a couple of monsters, lots of subterfuge, some kidnappings, rescues and numerous moments of peril. Not to mention wit, sarcasm and the occasional romantic interlude. Fun throughout.

Brilliant 4 April 2011

Another brilliant book by Lisa Shearin! Same Witty language that has you laughing and gasping throughout the fast paced and action packed story. What I really like about these books is how Lisa manages to recap slightly on previous books without getting too bogged down with the details. There are many plot twists and times when you are left guessing how Raine can possibly escape from trouble this time. Couldn't put the book down!!
If you want to start reading these books make sure you begin with Magic Lost Trouble Found Book 1 :)

Brilliant! 17 July 2011

Another great installment to the Raine Benares series. Things are kind of going to hell in a hand basket for Raine at the moment. One of the things I love about this series is it's unpredictability. Often, when your hero or heroine gets themselves in a bad situation, you can usually guess how they're going to get out of it. But with Raine, I have no clue. I just can't see it at all. She's not the type of girl that sits around waiting to be rescued, so she normally gets herself out using her wits alone. She's crafty and ingenious, and its great fun to read.

There are so many people after Raine at the moment that the poor girl seriously needs a break. I don't foresee one coming any time soon, though, as this book ends with a less than ideal situation for Raine.

I'm greatly looking forward to the next book All spell breaks loose, sometime next year. I recommend this series to anyone who likes fast moving, fantasy adventure with vivid and lovable characters, as well as smackable baddies aplenty
