Product Description

Product Description
There were not much people as animals. Sometimes small and frightened, huddling together in cattle cars, wounds gaping, tongues swelling even as they licked the moist frost from the walls - each of them wondering if he would be the next to die before reaching the crude operating table... And sometimes brawling, robbing and raping as they swept into Hamburg to glut themselves on life for one more day, or just one more night... And sometimes they were heroes, pushing their way through the Russian lines - the Legionnaire, Sven and Tiny, all of them knowing they had lost the war ...and every last shred of their own humanity.

About the Author
Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. Wounded eight times, he ended the war in a Russian prison camp. He wrote Legion of the Damned while being transferred between American, British and Danish prisons before making a new life for himself in Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comrades of War: A brilliant and stirring book, 21 Jan 2003
By Simon Pearson (Croydon, Surry United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Comrades of War (Paperback)
Returning from the harsh combat conditions of the western front, Tiny,Sven,Leigonnaire and the other men of the penal battalion are sent back to Hamburg to recieve hospital treatment. Meanwhile the frontline is drawing ever nearer. The fun dosen't stop there however, because neither Tiny, Legionaire or Sven intend to sit the hospital life out... Never trust a penel battalion; and especially never trust theirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars reality bites, 24 Nov 2008
By H. T. Davies - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following on from Wheels of Terror this is another one of Sven's more realistic works, by which I mean it seems more rooted in fact than novels such as The Bloody Road to Death. To correct the previous reviewer, they are on their way back from the Eastern (not Western) Front.

There is an interesting depiction of life on the homefront in Germany as well as the usual combat scenes in the East. There's also a murder mystery sub-plot and Tiny's courtship, one chilling and the other side splitting. The story of the zebra-man is strangely moving coming as it does in the middle of one of the knockabout sessions between Tiny and Heide.

The only complaint is with the translation which is a bit too mid-Atlantic Scandinavian; whoever thought of roller conveyor as a translation for Rollbahn? Still, that and a few other awkward phrases do not detract from the overall narrative drive of the novel. We see both the horror of war at the front and the side-effects back home - while some live the high-life in secret bars others are reduced to corpse robbing to survive and informers coem into their own.

With Legion of the Damned and Wheels of Terror I would rank this as one of the 'essential' Hassels.
