Computer Science: An Overview truly lives up to its title, providing an introduction to the entire computer science discipline. This broad coverage, combined with clear explanations, has made it the leading textbook for the beadth-first/CS0 course. The text is unique in that it avoids presenting topics from the perspective of any particular programming language. Moreover, the text communicates the dynamics of computer science by presenting topics in a historical perspective in which past developments, the current state of the art, and directions of research are discussed. The result is a balanced, realistic picture of computer science, including such topics as programming languages, operating systems, algorithms, software engineering, networking, database design, artificial intelligence, and machine architecture.

This seventh edition has been thoroughly updated to discuss important trends in such areas as networking and the Internet, software engineering, and artificial intelligence. Topics added include open-source development, associative memory, XML, and C#.

Thought-provoking discussions of ethical and legal issues revolving around computing are integrated into each chapter rather than being presented as separate, isolated topics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text for Computer Science 25 April 2003
Format:Paperback
This is a very good introduction to Computer Science. I have read the book from cover to cover. It touches on every aspect (introduction level) to this art and science of computing.

Nevertheless, if one wants a deeper/detailed insight into the topics, then I would suggest the reader uses the bibliography for further reading.

Good stuff!

When I purchased the sixth edition of this book, the seventh edition came out soon after. Fortunately I managed to share the latest version of the book with fellow students. There are generally two type of students - those who are of impatient type and happy to dive straight into the nitty-gritty without detailed explanation and the other want the full picture with a thorough explanation. Because this was a course book, I had to purchase it and I was horrified because this book is fairly textual and I am not a great reader. Looking at it now, I am glad to have gone through it and would admit that this book has enhanced my understanding and approach to the Computer Science discipline. The treatment given is thorough with little mathematical involvement. To summarise it, it is a good book and covers a good standard of grounding in Computer Science at elementary level. Highly recommended for undergraduates on a bridging course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction 2 May 2013

Book seems well written, and is easy to understand. I'll be starting a Computer Science degree in September this year so bought this just to get a little introduction into some of the topics that I'll be studying. The information isn't too basic, and I feel as if I do learn something when I read it. I think the information provided in the book is very useful.

There are also questions at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge which I think is very good. If you have difficulty answering the questions, then you know that you may need to look over the information in the book to gain a better understanding. Overall a good book, haven't got any bad comments.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference - too high level 16 Feb 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Although this is intended as a beginner's introductory course, some of the topics covered are just brushed over and in a high level overview mode. Language can be dense sometimes, and certain review questions require that you look into other books to find the appropriate answers... All in all it's a good reference and a quite established university bibliography requirement.
