This one of the best written computer(/programming) related book I have read. It is very clearly written, and the authors do an excellent job at explaining the fundamentals without too much jargon.

This book would easily deserve 5 stars if it wasn't for the poor on-line companion web page. I find that the wireshark labs found there are clearly written and easy to follow, but the skeleton code provided for the programming assignments are very poorly written, and often misleading. The self-assignment quizzes also seem not to have been updated for this version of the book (they refer to figures in the book, which are clearly not the figures they had in mind).

Certain technical books just seem to me to have the correct combination of technical detail, readability and care lavished upon them, 'A Top Down Approach' certainly falls into this category. As a start I'll get the pre-requisites for a comfortable read of this text out of the way: You should have coding experience in Python (for this edition the programming problems are in Python) or at least C or Java. Mathematically, you'll get the most out of the problems if you've a good grasp of the basics of probability (GCSE level, maybe beginning A-level)... That's it!

Roughly broken into two parts, the first covering the basic Internet layers (Application, Transport, Network, Link and Physical) and the second part covering things like Network Management, Security and Wireless Networks the book proceeds to give the thorough enough information on the subject to become a near expert.

What I particularly liked was the approach the authors took in the first chapter - giving a crash course of most of the topics to come and in so helping to avoid the problem in later chapters where you may have encountered unfamiliar terms. Additionally, the use of analogies (for example to explain the purpose of the Transport Layer) is very helpful and these are followed by a lucidly written technical explanation of the jobs that protocols at a certain level must do, as well as how real protocols do these jobs.

Practice problems are found at the end of each chapter and there are many to keep you occupied! They range from simple problems of calculating delays in networks to creating your own protocols and state machines to go with them. Programming assignments are offered also, with skeleton code for them given in Python allowing you to gain an understanding of protocol implementation.

This book covers a very wide area, covering all the main aspects of computer networking - the different layers of the TCP/IP model, routing protocols and security among other things. Was required reading for one of my modules this year but is definitely a book I will be keeping to refer to in the future as it is very readable while containing a large amount of info.

If your happy to read a lot then this is the book for you, but must say it explains different topics and methodologies in a easy to understand manner. I used it along side my final year lecture slides to expand my knowledge, and in the end came out with a respectable grade.
