Product Description

Product Description

This is a comprehensive text and reference that covers all aspects of computer music, including digital audio, synthesis techniques, signal processing, musical input devices, performance software, editing systems, algorithmic composition, MIDI, synthesizer architecture, system interconnection, and psychoacoustics. A special effort has been made to impart an appreciation for the rich history behind current activities in the field. "The Computer Music Tutorial" provides a step-by-step introduction to the entire field of computer music techniques. Written for nontechnical as well as technical readers, it uses hundreds of charts, diagrams, screen images, and photographs as well as clear explanations to present basic concepts and terms. Mathematical notation and program code examples are used only when absolutely necessary. Explanations are not tied to any specific software or hardware.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the bibles!, 21 Nov 2001
This book has become a standard text supporting our Music
technology students. Although it is getting on for 7 years old it provies all the necessary information to support undergraduate and much post graduate student in the fields of music technology and computer/electroacoustic composition and general sonic art creativity.

It is also very useful for many aspects of multimedia students who go beyond the simple web/CD-ROM type courses out there.

This book should perhaps be teamed up with the JOhn Watkinson books on digital audio and related systems for a more detailed technical coverage if required, and also the Focal Press music technology series including the excellent Andy Hunt and Ross Kirk book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 9 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This a great book. You certainly get your money's worth here. When the book lands on your doorstep, you'll know instantly why you paid for it. The book is full of information that you need to know about computer music. Although there is a lot of technical information on here, it is explained very clearly, and sometimes you can skip the mathematical theories. It is a great point to start a dissertation from. If there is something that you want to explore further which is not in the book, then you can always go to the 100+ page bibliography at the back. Overall it is a great book and is very clearly laid out and explained.

5.0 out of 5 stars "tutorial" in a sense, 28 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Just a brief note -- this isn't a "tutorial" in the sense that the word has taken on in computer circles in the past few years -- i.e., "here's how to do some simple things without really understanding how you're doing them, because you're too much of a doof to read the real documentation". I say this because I don't want anyone expecting such a thing for computer music to be disappointed by this excellent book -- so don't expect example C code on how to parse MIDI in here!

However, this is a tutorial in the older sense of being a work that aims to instruct you in a particular subject. And that it does very well!
