5.0 out of 5 stars Takes away the worries 27 Feb 2011

If you're new to building or maintaining computers, this is the book for you. Like most Haynes manuals the steps are clearly described in language that cuts out jargon and other unrequired explanation. I brought this for my 14 year old who wants to build his own computer and having read this through a couple of time we both felt we had the nessessary knowledge to carry out this operation -= which we did and saved s.
If you're used to this stuff you'll say it's a bit simple, but that is missing the point. This book will give you a robust skeleton and enough flesh to carry out the job. You can always add more later, like many things it is getting off the ground that is the tricky bit.
One last point do make sure you have the current version, don't be a cheapskate and buy an older version unless you are only dealing with older gear.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fairly thorough guide 31 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase
Covers a lot of topics in clear English. I would be confident in following these instructions. My only criticism is that this sort of book dates very fast - for example, this (revised 5th) edition is recent, but predates the release of Windows 7, for example. It is cheap and easier than googling a solution for most of the tasks in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Feeling dated 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase
Great manual for tweaking older computers but feeling dated with Microsoft XP to be killed off next year and some newer high end motherboards unsupported. Worth waiting for the next edition or considering Hayne's Build Your Own Computer [Aug 2012].

I purchased this book as I wanted to upgrade my RAM memory, instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Now for upgrading my hard drive. I have now added a second internal hard drive to my PC, once again it was easy to follow this manual so i can recommend it. Instructions are clear and easy to follow for someone who isn't techy like myself.
