Product Description

Product Description

The coral covered wrecks that litter the coastal waters of Britain were once ships that carried valuable cargoes and passengers to all parts of the world. Now home to lobsters, other crustaceans and shoals of fish they are only visited today by inquisitive divers. Ron Young, an experienced diver and dive book author, assesses the numerous wrecks as diving and boat angling sites, and describes the marine life and treasures to be found on the seabed along this treacherous part of England's coast.

By Ned Middleton HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
I had previously written separate reviews for Vols. 1 and 2 of this book but because they were constantly placed against the wrong volume, I have now combined them.

Ron Young is an acknowledged expert on shipwrecks in addition to being a scuba diver of many years experience. His one outstanding ability, however, is to produce book after book containing exactly the sort of information which scuba divers and others with an interest in shipwrecks want to know.

Following the already well-established format of previous books in this series, Mr Young sets out to provide a catalogue of all known ships stranded or lost along the east coast of England from Scarborough to Skegness with Volume 1 covering the years 1766-1917 and Volume 2 the years 1918 to 2003 with an additional chapter on German Submarines. I can only suggest that every Scuba Diver who frequents this stretch of coastline - either frequently or occasionally, will want to buy this book and they will be very sorry they did not do so once it becomes out of print.

In both cases, we commence with an introduction and the Author's customary (and very useful.) "how to use this book." The stretch of coastline in question is then divided into 6 consecutive chapters with Volume I containing a fascinating insight into the German Medal - the "Blue Max" and details of 50 German Submarines from the period in question. Volume 2 has a very educational insight into German Submarines - particularly the SM type submarine from WW1.

These books are paperback measuring 9½ in x 6½ in. packed with information and a reasonable number of historic photographs of various ships.

There are no colour or underwater photographs - it is not that type of book. With a selection of something in the region of 450 wrecks, this two volumes concentrates on those details people want to know - such as depth, position (usually in WGS84) and distance from wherever on the shore, as it moves ever southwards from shipwreck to shipwreck along the featured coastline. The book also includes each ship's technical details, builder, past owners and final voyage The addition of a "star" rating for the actual wreck condition - with 1 star being little wreckage remaining and 5 stars being an intact wreck, is a touch of simple genius.

In short, as far as scuba divers, sea anglers and boat skippers are concerned, the information given by this author is exactly what is required in order for them to locate each wreck and understand precisely what they are likely to find when they get there.

This is a book for the serious diver and it will not be long before well-used and well-thumbed copies are seen protruding from kit bags - alongside copies of Volume One, all down the east coast.
