Very informative and insightfull! Good read! As advertised: "enjoyable and readable".
Every section is self-contained; succinct thoughts and ideas.
Simplifies and clarifies otherwise confusing or obtuse topics.
Much of the data in the book can be found else where; but the insights, including editorial comments: simply priceless.

Finally! A great book on SAE J1939! - 5 Stars
Well, it can't get any better than this! Together with "A Comprehensible Guide to Controller Area Network" by the same author I now have a reference to J1939 that covers the most important documents: SAE J1939, SAE J1939/11, SAE J1939/21 and SAE J1939/81 and that for a fraction of the price of the SAE downloads. Just to put things into perspective, the book does not contain all PGNs and SPNs (but I do know now what they are), which make 1000+ pages in the SAE J1939 Standards Collection, but it explains the J1939 standard (as the title promises) in a "comprehensible" way. The author uses plain English (something that you won't find in the SAE documents) and provides a great number of illustrations that are painfully missing in the SAE J1939 standards. A great reading for everybody who either needs an entry into J1939 or just wants to know how J1939 works.

This is a good overview of J1939. It will not really get you up and working on the networks as it does not include the detailed specs etc (you need to spend a load of money with the SAE for that) but it gives you a good level of detail.
It is worth a read if you want to learn more about the networks. Good for engineers, too detailed for technicians.

Good, didactic and helpful book, but could be better

A very good and helpful book, but could be a little better if avoided too much repetitions.
This book is very helpful for anyone who needs to speed the learning process, by providing the big picture of the protocol in a "comprehensible" and didactic way.
The author really seems a bit "pedantic" on his comments on the SAE and the standard, even though, from my experience, I have to agree with him with most of what he complains about the standard.
I only won't give it five stars because I agree with other reviews in what regards the repetitions.
I know sometimes it can be a good didactic technique to repeat important information, in different forms, in a kind of spiral approach. But the author seemed to copy and paste entire paragraphs throughout many chapters, over and over, what ends up being annoying.
Aside from that, I would recommend this book for anyone needing to learn the protocol, as a starting point, before taking the standards.

Review of "Comprehensible Guide to J1939"

The "Comprehensible Guide to J1939" is a very helpful document that provides you with a basic understanding of the J1939 standard. I would recommend this brief book to anyone who wants to get started learning about J1939 - it's a good value for the price. The vendor selling this product fully met all my expectations.

Technically good, but annoying

The book provides a far better introduction and explanation of the J1939 protocol than the spec itself. Having written a J1939 stack from first principles using the official spec, I would rather have had this book.
I did find the author's style over pedantic. Yes, accuracy is important, but being over pedantic is just plain annoying and detracts from the readibility of the book.
He complains about trivial errors in the spec even though he makes some himself.
He complains at least three times that the spec uses mS for milliseconds but should not because S is the the abbreviation for siemens - the SI unit for conductance (ie. the inverse of ohms). This is rather pedantic as very few people ever use siemens and the engineers that wrote the spec were American, I believe, and would more likely have used mhos. As the author has lived in USA for many years, he should be aware that USA has not adopted SI and not expect perfect use of SI.
He even complains that the spec uses "packetized" which is not an official English word.
Even with these annoyances I found this a very worth-while book.
