4.0 out of 5 stars whimsical yet cute adult fairy tale 12 May 2002
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Almost three millenniums ago, the Fates punish skeptic Darius for interfering with Eros' task of firing arrows containing true love to the mortal plane. His sentencing is to match up one hundred soul mates in love, but he must do so in a shrimp short-tempered gnome body instead of his natural handsome hunk figure. After twenty-seven centuries of being the laughing stock of Mount Olympus, Darius has one couple to go.

Taking his annual one-week vacation in the Idaho Mountains in which he allowed to return to his normal body, Darius observes triathlete Ariel Summers calmly struggle to stay alive during a rock slide. He helps her and takes her to his cabin, a shocker because the last visitor was Hemingway over eight decades ago. As they fall in love, Darius worries that Cupid stealthily shot him. What will happen to true love when he returns to his gnome form?

Perhaps the reigning queen of romantic fantasy, Kristine Grayson provides her audience with her usual whimsical yet cute novel. Whether readers find the story line UTTERLY CHARMING depends on taste because for much of the book Darius is as anti a hero as a protagonist can be even if he saves Ariel's life. Instead he is a dumpy grumpy schlump. On the other hand, Ariel is a courageous soul who goes after what she wants without worrying about the outer wrappings. Thus the audience wonders just whom the human really is. Still the story line is amusing for those readers who enjoy a contemporary adult fairy tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, well written, sweet paranormal romance 21 Mar 2011
By L. P. King - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a modern story featuring the ancient immortal hero Darius, a champion of the original Olympics. Long ago, nearly three thousand years in the past, Dar got a little smart with The Fates, those three Greek deities who determine everyone's fate, whether mortal or immortal. As punishment, he has to match up one hundred couples. Yes, Cupid comes into this story, too -- as Darius's nemesis.

This is a sweet romance with some smouldering in the background, excellent writing, and several effective secondary characters. There's just enough magic on the part of the immortals that it fits firmly in the paranormal genre, without requiring huge amounts of world building. These immortals are everyday people who just happen to have powers they use sometimes to great effect, but often with unexpected and unfortunate results. The attraction between Ariel and Darius, and the obstacles that come between them, are central to the story. Their characters are well drawn, with believable hang-ups and problems.

If I hadn't disciplined myself, I could easily have been glued to the screen of my laptop (where my Kindle app resides) until I'd finished the thing in one go!

If you normally don't read paranormals, you may enjoy this one regardless. The magic is used mostly as backstory, comic relief, and evidence of the human frailty and silliness of the immortals. If you've ever read Bullfinch's Mythology, you'll recognize the trope, but if you haven't, don't let that stop you. No archaeology/history expertise required.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the 1st grayson book I read - it was G rated sweet 7 May 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
If you are looking for a steamy romance, this is just not it. I counted 3 kiss scenes and no description like many of the authors want to give of tongues sweeping into mouths etc etc etc. It is very G rated and I can see by looking at reviews of her other books (that I am debating on reading) that reviewers have complained that the other books weren't really romances because of the lack of romantic scenes. I want to partly agree. I kept expecting the great love scene and the passion, which this simply lacked, but I did find it enteraining, and did enjoy reading it.
