Having been a devoted fan of the incomparable Holmes for more years than I care to mention, and having fond memories of the Challenger novels and some of the historical novels from my early years, this collection was a must.

As well as all of the well-known stuff, there are some added gems in this volume - for instance, there are a couple of very short little Holmes stories that Conan Doyle wrote for charity fund-raisers - these humorous little tales are written like affectionate pastiches of his own style. Have you ever fancied writing your own Holmes story? Well, now's your chance - The Adventure of the Tall Men is Conan Doyle's outline of a story he never finished. I spent a happy half-hour imagining how he would have filled out these bare bones into a full-fledged tale.

Then, we have the Challenger stories. While they fell away towards the end, the first couple are classics of early science fiction and written with Conan Doyle's trademark humour and excitement. I haven't got round to re-reading the historical novels yet, nor any of the other fiction and non-fiction included in this collection - it's such fun to know there's still so much to discover.

So why only 4 stars? (Now 5 stars - see edit below.) One reason, but for Holmes fanatics, an important one. Each time there should be a diagram or a plan, instead we just get the word `GRAPHIC'. So there's no map in The Priory School, no plan in The Golden Pince-Nez, and, worst of all, there are no Dancing Men! We all like to try to work out the cipher ourselves, don't we, (or is that just me?) so this seems like a terrible omission, spoiling one of the greatest of all the stories.

For all the extras, and at the ridiculous price, this collection is well worth having, but I'll still be holding on to my tattered old paper Holmes for the diagrams and, most of all, for the Dancing Men!

Edit: Just a few days after this review went up I was contacted by Delphi Classics (see comments). They had noted my comments about the graphics and resolved them immediately. As part of the deal if the collection is updated you can get the updated copy free - just contact Kindle Support on your Manage my Kindle page. Absolutely great service from Delphi, responsive to customer comment...I'm amazed! Now I've got the map in the Priory School, the plan in the Golden Pince-Nez and, best of all, the Dancing Men! Now a 5-star collection - frankly, if Amazon would let me, I'd give 6. (Still keeping my paper copy as well, though - nostalgia...)

I'm a recent owner of a Kindle, and among my first purchases was the Delphi Classics Conan Doyle collection. So far I've only read through the first four Sherlock Holmes books and dipped in and out of some of the later stories. I'm very impressed by the amount of material within the collection. I know that these are Public Domain and would be available for free - but in my opinion it is definitely worth the couple of pounds for someone else to do the leg work for me.

A couple of minor niggles - while the first three Holmes books seem remarkably free from errors there are far more typos in the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It is a shame that there's no easy way of noting these because Delphi seem very amenable to updating collections in response to customer's comments. My second minor niggle is that the stories seem to use American spelling, rather than the English spelling that the books would originally have used.

However, all in all, I'm extremely happy with the collection and have since purchased further Delphi collections.

I had previously bought another Doyle ebook collection from a different publisher which was less complete than this one, then added some other Doyle ebooks from other sources (bought or from Project Gutenberg). I thought I was happy with that, but this collection from Delphi Classics certainly improves on the previous one, so it has been well worthwhile for me to pay for some stuff twice! The cost of this is very modest for what you get. It's a pretty comprehensive collection, though not absolutely complete (see below). Strongly recommended.

Some minor niggles: (NB: SEE NOTE BELOW)

(1) It would be nice to have a full indexed list of short stories, which is a feature of other Delphi collections but is not included in this one. The "Other Fiction" section in the Contents is a mix of short story collections and some full length novels, so it's a bit tricky to locate specific stories.

(2) I can't find Doyle's autobiographical "Memories and Adventures" in this collection. This is much more interesting than those embarassing books about fairies, spiritualism, etc. I think there are also a couple of dramatised versions of Sherlock Holmes stories by Doyle himself that are not included here, but these are less significant.

(3) For some bizarre reason my Kindle contents page indexes this collection under B for Barrie rather than D for Doyle.

NOTE ADDED: Delphi Classics have notified me that they have sorted out the niggles mentioned above, which is great service, though I haven't yet figured out how to get the updated version via Amazon.
