Product Description

Review

This new edition makes a landmark of scholarship available in a very usable form. -- "Library Journal --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

The Oxford Translation of Aristotle was originally published in 12 volumes between 1912 and 1954. It is universally recognized as the standard English version of Aristotle. This revised edition contains the substance of the original Translation, slightly emended in light of recent scholarship; three of the original versions have been replaced by new translations; and a new and enlarged selection of Fragments has been added. The aim of the translation remains the same: to make the surviving works of Aristotle readily accessible to English speaking readers.

If, like me, you don't read Greek, this is the best set of English translations there is. If you want to have a lot of Aristotle's writings to hand, this edition of his works, in two volumes edited by Jonathan Barnes, is almost universally recognized as the best thing to get hold of. (Do not listen to the first reviewer! Aristotle's thought is very rarely stale and never easy. And we can hardly complain that there are no commentaries in this excellent edition of translations.)

A real bargain 9 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
This volume contains all of Aristotle's logical works and many of his lesser known (or certainly lesser read) treatises. The fact that the entire collection of Aristotle's works is contained in just two volumes (the second includes the Metaphysics and Nicomachean Ethics) is remarkable, particularly as the original version consisted of 12 volumes. Every English speaking student of Aristotle should own these volumes.
