Features include: all of Carroll's poems and prefatory material; Sir John Tenniel’s masterful illustrations; additional illustrations by Henry Holiday and Lewis Carroll; and a special glossary of Victorian and Carrollian terms (not merely “Jabberwock,” “vorpal” and “frabjous day,” but also such curiosities as "Wednesday week," "treacle" and “bathing-machine.”).

Bonus materials exclusive to this edition include: the lost “Wasp in a Wig” chapter, with commentary; diary entries and letters from Alice and Lewis Carroll; uniquely written explanatory notes; source poetry for all of Carroll’s poems and songs; biographies for Charles Dodgson and Alice Pleasance Liddell; extensive and unique chronologies; fascinating background essays; and much, much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Master Edition - the best Alice Kindle choice 22 Jan. 2011
By Anniepoo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This Kindle edition is the BEST EXCELLENT choice - 5 stars. 5 stars is also for the original books. I sampled many Alice in Wonderland and all the Through the Looking Glass books I could find available (at Amazon and Gutenberg org - though today I discovered one I'm sorry I missed before - This One). I believe I found that the best available editions, if you want both, are:

This Master Edition The Complete Alice in Wonderland (Kindle Master Editions) which I missed before (likely because I was concentrating on Through the Looking Glass, which has far fewer editions, and then pursuing the 'matching' Alice in Wonderlands). Today the price is .89 (and worth a good bit more than that in my opinion) and I have now bought it. It is very well formatted and has even more Alice writings (beyond Wonderland and Looking Glass) as well as essays and historical info and other 'add-ons'. He has all the illustrations from Tenniel and additional ones from Holliday and Carroll (I think he should consider adding Rackham's, too). There is a TOC which links to each book and other sections. I would like to see in future additions an improved TOC - I would suggest that the link to each book takes one to a book-specific TOC with chapter links. I would also love to see, either in a TOC form, or (maybe better?) in an index form, links to the illustrations and the poems as well.

The BLTC at 1.79 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (BLTC Press Edition) - this edition is very well formatted with all the Tenniel illustrations that I recall and is the first one I purchased myself.

The Bompacrazy at .99 Alice in Wonderland (Illustrated) or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Illustrated) (these two appear to be exactly the same from the samples as both have the 'blotted out' picture of the Drink Me tag): this is almost as good a choice, though not quite as well formatted. The sample has a Rackham illustration (and there may be more) as well as the many Tenniel, though, which is a plus.

The free Gutenberg org versions - lacked the improved linking and formatting, but there are various illustrated editions; may be worth it to you if .99 is too much or you are looking for something other than Tenniel.

I did see a kindle version of an 'Original First Edition' Alice which appears to be illustrated by Arthur Rackham - in case you are looking for that one instead of the better known John Tenniel version. Alice In Wonderland - Original First Edition Version Published For Kindle - Lewis Carroll That edition has no Tenniel illustrations in the sample; also the text seems to be abridged (or just maybe an earlier version?) and the formatting is poor. Note that the picture of Alice looking at the Cheshire Cat in a tree that appears on this linked product page is not the cover that appears on the downloaded sample; the cover that does appear is of Alice walking with the Duchess and looks like this kindle book: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass - now for more typical Amazon mis-linked craziness, this latter edition has Tenniel illustrations, but beware that they are very small thumbnails and enlarge to very poor quality. I do not recommend either of these editions. The Rackham is available at Gutenberg for free.

As many others have said, the basic Kindle edition is a very poor choice, and most others also lack the illustrations. Thank goodness for samples.

Re Through the Looking Glass, it was the chess board appearing in the BLTC sample (and not in the BompaCrazy sample) that finalized my choice in their favor (before finding the Master). Here are the BLTC and BompaCrazy links:
Through the Looking Glass - BLTC
Through the Looking Glass (Illustrated) - BompaCrazy

I found no others that came up in my Looking Glass search that contained illustrations worth looking at, though I did not sample all that might have come up with an Alice search.

I hope this review helps you find your best choice far more quickly than I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Kindle Edition there is! 9 Feb. 2011
By E. Ng - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I searched high and low for a Kindle edition that includes both "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass". I wanted an edition with all the illustrations. This is the ONLY edition that includes original illustrations for both stories. Also, this book comes with several more Alice stories, including the 1st draft AND original drawings by Lewis Carroll himself! For the price this is the best edition ever! I've read other editions (free and non-free), they just don't compare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Alice in Wonderland books WITH ILLUSTRATIONS 25 Jan. 2011
By Ted L. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
By far the best Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass collection. It includes introductory material, essays, and all of the original illustrations. The poetry is also formatted correctly. It is definitely worth the money versus the free versions of the books which have screwed up or missing poetry and no illustrations.

The books are great whimsical children's books, which are also entertaining to read as an adult.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all it claims to be... 5 April 2012
By NYC-Ill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This seems to be the best Kindle version available, but the pompous claims about the 'extras' are an overt lie. The reflections and background materials are prepared by another 'Kindle Expert', meaning, no scholarship, only self-aggrandizing self-promotion. You could NOT use these reflections for a school paper or for real insight into the authors work. The illustrations are scans that are sized about one-quarter of the screen. The ToC lists only work titles and the editors 'reflections'. For real "Master Edition" status, I would have expected certain highlights of these brilliant books detailed; at the VERY LEAST chapter headings and important poems i.e.: Jabberwocy. The 'reflections' of the editor are just silly, badly written ! with exclamation points everywhere! and without any value. Good for a clean, serviceable Alice. but overall, another over=priced package. Maybe worth .99 cents, not 1.99.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Version -- Loads of Bonus Material -- and a Deal, Too! 25 Feb. 2011
By Tia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thank you, Kent David Kelly, for putting this together! Anniepoo's January 22 review says it all, in glorious detail, but I can't stop myself from chiming in. This version is so much superior to the free ones: for a modest price, you get a thoughtful introduction, essays, Tenniel illustrations, and not just Alice and Looking Glass, but also Underground, Snark, the nursery version of Alice, poems, a Victorian glossary and other goodies. What a deal! It's rather like a DVD with bonus material WORTH watching. Some Kindle-ized books are rife with OCR errors. Not this one. Evidently, this is the lovely result when a real human being, who knows and loves the work, puts a Kindle edition together. This wasn't just slapped into the scanner. Get it. At ten times the price, a bargain.
