This cookbook is absolutely fantastic- filled with a mixture of classic veggie recipes such as moussakas, nut roasts etc, but also bursting with opportunities to experiment and be inventive!
There is a section for basics- how to make pasta, pizza and so on, as well as a great range of sauces and condiments to bring dishes to life.
Divided into breakfasts, light meals, main meals, sauces and salds, baking and desserts, the cookbook caters for all levels of cooks- from first-timers in the kitchen, to advanced cooks catering for a dinner party!
All of the recipes are clear and easy to follow, with useful tiips for interesting variations to some dishes. The wide range of vegan recipes are clearly marked, and a great deal more are quite easily adaptable.
Aside from the diverse and interested recipes, the book is filled with pages of information about vegetarianism, cooking, and a hugely comprehensive directory of ingredients, including vegetables, nuts, fruits, spices, grains, pulses, seeds, herbs and more!
Beautifully illustrated, this concise, varied and wide-ranging cookbook is the only one you'll need for a long time!

I've ordered quite a few veggie cookbooks lately and now that I've got this one - I won't give it up!! It's packed full of recipes and has great colour shots (helpful to see what your cooking is supposed to look like). The first 125 pages or so is all about nutrition and the different food groups. Every recipe has a breakdown - calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates.

There is such a huge variety of recipes and all of the additional information you get with this book is priceless!!

I have been a big fan of Sarah Brown for over 20 years - even though I am not a vegetarian! The reason for this is that I enjoy food and cookery and her love of these is so clear in all her cookery books. This particular book is marvellous for both vegetarians and non-vegatarians who like a change as it covers a huge range of meal types and tastes. Her books are all easy to follow and usually without a lot of fuss or finicky ingredients. Be aware that this book is the same as "Vegetarian Bible" (which is basically the US version), but buy this version for UK. It is essential to your kitchen.

great to have such a wide range of veggie recepies in one place. the recipes do come out just as they do in the pictures. really great salads, but the most of the mains were dissappointing. if you love leeks you'll love this cook book, but i found many of the recipes look great but were bit bland.

Over the last few years, my husband and I have cooked lots of recipes from this cookbook and every single one has turned out really well. There are lots of dinner party ideas, as well as lunches, dinners, breakfasts, etc., and the lemon tart thing is easy to make and tastes amazing. Also wonderful for veggie-box buyers, who struggle to be inventive with all that weird root veg. When we first got it, I read the Introduction too because it has some good info. about getting a balanced diet as a veggie. Definintely recommend it.

OK, being a bit of a cookbook freak (I have a hundred or so mostly veggie) I was a bit put off buying a Readers Digest book as I thought it was going to be too much like so many other books that are unimaginative and hum drum. The reason I decided to buy it is that is it written by Sarah Brown, now I have two very old Sarah Brown books probably some of the first I bought when I became a vegetarian 25 years ago and I have always gone back to them.

Well, I wasn't disappointed, the choice of dishes is wonderful and the photography does great justice to them too. The first chapter on Nutrition is useful if vegetarianism is new to you and also the section on ingredients is also very good, I learnt things even after 25 years of following a vegetarian diet! Most recipes have a photo so if you like to see what you are getting before you cook then this is a real bonus.

Everything I have cooked so far has been lovely and here are a few things I chose to be the first to try:-
Herb Soufflé
- Baked Tofu & Mushrooms
- Kuku with Spinach (Frittata from the Middle East)
- 3 Flour Pizza Bases with Saffron Onion Pizza topping
- Red Rice with Pan fried Squash, mushrooms and pecans
- Sesame Millet with pan fried courgettes, asaragus & avocado cream
- Wild rice with hazelnuts, carrots and artichokes
- Couscous with spiced tofu and mixed pepper sauce
- Broadbean & chickpea tagine
- Spiced Cauliflower & green beans
- Tomato Raita with cumin
- Mixed Lentil Dhal
- Roasted pecan & cashew loaf
- Spiced Hazelnut and quinoa bake

For the money this is a great buy particularly if you like tasty, colourful and delicious vegetarian food (plus my omnivorous husband loves the recipes too!)

We bought this book for my daughter, who had decided she finally needed to learn how to cook. She has since been making one dish a week (and eating it as the week goes by!). I was so keen on the book that I bought myself a copy too, and have enjoyed using it. The portions are not always huge (now is that a good or bad thing?) but the food is varied, tasty, and the recipes make sense as you use them. This has helped us cut our meat consumption, and we both feel healthier as a result. Very good purchase, esp for those new to cooking.
