Product Description

This Halcyon Classics ebook of THE NIGHT OF A THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT (commonly referred to as THE ARABIAN NIGHTS) is the complete, unabridged translation by Sir Richard F. Burton. Burton was a 19th century Renaissance man, noted for his achievements as an explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, ethnologist, linguist, poet, hypnotist, fencer and diplomat.

Burton was a world traveler who visited Mecca on Hajj in disguise in the 1850s (as an infidel he would have been killed had he been discovered) and is credited as the first European to see Lake Tanganyika in Africa. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian, and African languages.

THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. Some of the best-known stories of The Nights include "Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp", "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and "The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor."

This ebook is DRM free and includes an active table of contents for easy navigation.

This unexpurgated edition contains the complete text, with minor errors and omissions corrected.

1.0 out of 5 stars how not to produce an e-book 12 July 2011
I agree with everything the previous reviewer wrote.
Don't buy this book. It's not worth the money, Evan if it was free.

The book is badly formatted. It is basically one block of text, making it hard to read. Full of spelling errors and occasional punctuation.
It is in dire need of a proof reader.
It is basicly the best example you will find, of how not to produce an e-book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always Worth Reading 21 April 2011
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Here are the full sixteen volumes of 'The Arabian Nights', as translated by Sir Richard Burton. I think that everyone must be aware of and read the more famous ones of these, or I should say the more tame ones. Don't be fooled that this is a nice clean book for your child, because this book contains all the stories, and that includes some that are for adult eyes.

Burton originally published ten volumes, and then added to them with six other supplemental volumes, all of which are contained herein. If you want to read all the stories in the original unexpurgatd version that Burton intended, then this is it, it is also probably the best collection of the tales in English. You will have plenty of tales to keep you more than entertained.

2.0 out of 5 stars Edited by an illiterate machine? 30 Jun 2011
I was persuaded to buy this edition of the Arabian Nights by the low price and the claim that it was, to quote the publisher Halcyon Classics, "the complete text with minor errors and omissions corrected" and that it had "a fully active table of contents".

The price is not low enough:

*The active index is only at the volume level, i.e. you can go to the beginning of each of the sixteen volumes, but not to any individual story.
*Burton provided hundreds of footnotes; there is no linking between the footnote indicators and the footnotes and the indicators are distractingly embedded in the text.
*With occasional exceptions (and then only by capitalising the text) there is no typographical distinction between the story headings and the rest of the text.
*Typos abound, the most irritating being the substitution of "shine" for "thine" throughout. Words are hyphenated in the middle of lines or contain spaces.

The impression given is that an old edition was scanned, machine converted to text and an automatic spelling check run. Lazy, sloppy work.
