Product Description

Synopsis

This work offers guidelines for curriculum design and teaching approaches for adult education programmes that are broader and more interactive than many existing programmes for undereducated adults. The authors describe ways in which classes can be organized and lessons developed around the specific needs and interests of adult learners rather than around pre-packaged materials. Using this whole language approach, they give attention to reading and writing, GED and computer awareness, support and practical suggestions are provided for teachers who believe that an adult education programme must be based on current meaningful topics and be carried out in ways that respect students, actively involving them in learning meaningful content. The book identifies a structure in which adults acquire lifelong abilities and enhanced self-esteem. This theory-to-practice handbook may be useful to teachers of adult programmes in community education, business or industrial settings, as well as to administrators and education advisors of these programmes.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Tehoery to Practice Handbook of Adult Literacy, 14 Nov 2009
This review is from: The Complete Theory to Practice Handbook of Adult Literacy: Curriculum Design and Teaching Approaches (Language & Literacy Series) (Language and Literacy Series) (Paperback)
Although quite old now, this is a good introduction to teaching adult literacy. It goes into strategies for teaching reading and writing, but there's little on eg spelling and phonics. The sections on ICT are very out-of-date now. Possibly more relevant for US.

Whilst at times popssibly a bit 'preachy' and I suppose aimed at the American market, this book has provided some handy hints for setting up classes. It includes quite a lot about IT. A useful part of background reading with some handy strategies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too dated!, 10 Aug 2005
By P. Frederick "bookworm" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Complete Theory to Practice Handbook of Adult Literacy: Curriculum Design and Teaching Approaches (Language & Literacy Series) (Language and Literacy Series) (Paperback)
While some info in the book might still be relevant, it was printed in 1990. This is much to long ago considering there have been 15 years of additional research on reading theory and practice. Had I realized the publication date, I would not have bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! More than I expected., 31 May 2009

This book is a really good read. It met my needs for writing curriculum. I was also in good (like new) condition, as promised.
