Product Description

Product Description

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the earliest pioneers of the short story and perfected the tale of psychological horror. The entirety of Poe's body of imaginative work encompasses detective tales, satires, fables, fantasies, science fiction, verse dramas and some of the most evocative poetry in the English language. This leatherbound omnibus collects all of Poe's fiction and poetry in a single volume, including 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Tell-Tale Heart,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum.' 'The Raven,' 'Annabel Lee,' and the full-length novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe is part of Barnes & Noble's series of quality leatherbound volumes. Each title in the series presents a classic work in an attractively designed edition bound in genuine bonded leather. These books make elegant additions to any home library.

About the Author

Edgar Allan Poe self-published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827. In 1830, Poe embarked on a career as a writer and began contributing reviews and essays to popular periodicals. He also wrote sketches and short fiction and in 1833 published his only completed novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Over the next five years he established himself as a master of the short story form through the publication of 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Masque of the Red Death,' 'The Tell-tale Heart' and other well-known works. In 1841, he wrote 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue,' generally considered the first modern detective story. The publication of The Raven and Other Poems in 1845 brought him additional fame as a poet.

Despite the title, this volume is not a complete collection of Poe's tales or poems, although *most* of them are present. His essays, reviews and miscellania are almost completely absent. There is no introduction, no notes and nothing in the way of commentary. The absence of this latter can make reading difficult, as Poe made frequent use of French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew quotations, and also employed obscure and unfamiliar words and mythological allusions. However, the stories and poems are presented in a logical order, those with similar themes being clustered together.

There are other compilations of Poe available (with lower prices) which contain basically the same material. This book is not of exceptional quality; the print used (at least in my copy) smudges, and the text contains a number of printing errors.

On the quality of Poe's fiction itself (rather than this particular volume) he cannot be faulted. A true master of every literary style to which he turned his hand, Poe elevated the short story to an artform and even created the detective fiction genre. Many writers since owe him a huge debt.

Ive read a few of the stories and poems from this book, and I really like the language used and the way it is written, but then if you're buying this then chances are you've read Poe before. It is as far as I can tell the collection of everything and anything that can be found to be written by Poe, and its bound and a very good quality manner. The faux leather is embossed with red detail, the paper used is good quality (though still slightly thin, though if it was thicker, the book would be much thicker). The paper is edged with silver, and the type face used inst too small so as to make reading uncomfortable.

Very good looking book, and if your a fan, I dare bet this is your best option :D

Grade A book pron 30 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll admit it, I'm a bibliophile. More often than not, the binding of a book is as important to me as the content, which is why I ordered this particular Poe anthology over a cheaper paperback version.

I had to wait a short while for it to be dispatched, but patience is a virtue as they say. When it DID arrive, I was astounded. The image on Amazon doesn't do it justice! The text is a pale silver/bone shade, set against a raven black leather embossed with patterns in crimson gore. The pages are edged in a softly reflective, pearlescent silver, which feels silky and altogether too sensual beneath the fingers.

Content is, of course, unparallelled - all Poes works, beautifully presented with footnotes and appendices, and a few illustrations in a style contemporaneous with the time of Poes writing.

So if you want some Poe, and you derive guilty plesure from stroking books, holding them, sniffing them, then devouring the words withing, get this tome. Paperback versions? Nevermore!
