Product Description

Product Description

Since forming in Sheffield in 2006, Slow Club have released two EPs and two albums, each showcasing different and distinct facets of their musical DNA. While most bands seem happy to rest on their laurels, afraid to push their sound forward, multi-instrumentalists Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson, for it is they, get a bit bored of recreating the same things over and over. So while their debut album, 2009's Yeah So, was a beautifully ramshackle collection of country and folk-tinged strumalongs, 2011's more experimental Paradise pushed and pulled the band into myriad new musical directions. But nothing can quite prepare you for the quantum leap that takes place on their beautifully epic forthcoming third album, Complete Surrender. Recorded with producer Colin Elliot, who's previously helped create an equally widescreen sound on albums by Richard Hawley, Complete Surrender touches on everything from Motown and the output of Memphis' Stax Records to the immaculately produced pop of the 1970s, via Frankie Valli and David Bowie. Mostly written in a pool-house hideaway in Stroud, away from temptation and distraction, Complete Surrender - despite being released nearly three years after Paradise - actually came quite quickly, with songs started in January 2013 and the bulk of the album finished by May. Complete Surrender is the sound of a band completely in control of their muse; showcasing not only a desire to experiment but to harness that spirit into songs that still make total sense. Skipping along from the celebratory, upbeat, pure pop rush of the title track (and first single) via the lovelorn urgency of Not Mine To Love, to the slowburn majesty of the horn-lead The Queen's Nose - which showcases Rebecca's emotional, lung-bursting vocals - it's an album that you'll want to live inside for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Surrendered (Completely!) 17 July 2014
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Heavens to Betsy but this is one beautiful piece of work! Slow Club's
new album 'Complete Surrender' contains two of the very finest songs I
have heard this year but hang on, I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here.

Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson clearly know what they're about
when it comes to crafting a good tune and they both have the kind of
voices that can make you feel warm and fluffy all over. There's a bitter-
sweet quality to their writing which connects directly with our emotions.
Tales of love and loss and all the stuff which matters to sentient beings.

Producer Colin Elliot deserves plaudits too for dressing up the bare bones
of these inventions in just the right kind of restrained sonic finery they deserve.

There are eleven numbers in the set and every one's a winner. Upbeat songs
such as 'The Pieces' and title track 'Complete Surrender' are full of raucous
soulful energy and contribute welcome contrast to the largely melancholy mood
of the rest of the project but it's those sad songs which have really stolen my heart.

Ms Taylor's performance of the utterly sublime composition 'Dependable People
and Things That I'm Sure Of' is so perfectly poised and poignant that it quite
takes one's breath away and the epic final number 'Wandering Wandering' finds
Mr Watson digging deep with his gloriously fragile voice to deliver the project's
most uplifting moment. An extraordinarily moving conclusion to a truly great album.

Honest music making really doesn't get any better than this.

Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Fab & So Clever Too 14 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Love it, Love it, Love it. They both have wonderful voices, the songs are a great mix, Tears of Joy, Everything Is New, The Pieces & Wanderer Wandering are complete standouts. Love the drumming on Wanderer Wandering then the keyboard comes in.
Will try and see them asap, another fine album brought to the 21 yr old daughter's attention by her ole dad, she loves the music too. It is lovely to be able to share quite of lot of music with her but I can't get her to like prog rock (yet)!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best record I've heard in quite a while 17 July 2014
Format:Audio CD
This is a very good album and well repays repeated listens. It's all good but highlights for me are the opener 'Tears of Joy', the closer 'Wanderer Wandering', 'Complete Surrender','Number One' and 'Not MIne to Love' (which is a vocal tour de force Alison Moorer would be proud of). I like the motowney soulful stuff too (the Queen's Nose, Suffering Me, Suffering You). Both singers have gorgeous voices in different ways. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Evolution 20 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD
A great evolution from their last stuff. Some real 60s inspired stuff, sounds a little like the Pippettes and then the usual beautiful ballads. A bit of a grower but worth the 3-4 listens!
