Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This compendium of six paperback books contains lovely stories about Sophie who is "small but very determined". She was born on Christmas Day, and has older twin brothers Matthew and Mark, and a mummy and daddy. Sophie, like lots of other little girls, loves animals and she's determined that she's going to be a lady farmer when she grows up. The books are primarily aimed at children who are mastering how to read for pleasure, probably aged 6-7 years, but the stories are also suitable to be read to younger children as the vocabulary is uncomplicated and easy to understand. The black-and-white illustrations by David Parkins are simple and humorous and really add to the overall enjoyment of the stories.

All the books are beautifully written by award-winning author, Dick King Smith, who used to be a farmer. Probably best known for writing The Sheep Pig (filmed as Babe), he's become accepted as one of the world's favourite children's authors. Each stands alone and can be read and enjoyed as a single story. The six books come attractively boxed in a brightly coloured slip case and will make an excellent gift for young animal lovers everywhere--especially those called Sophie!--Susan Naylor

About the Books

Sophie's Snail
Meet Sophie, "Small but very determined", aged 4, and her family and discover Sophie's fondness for most creatures, especially small ones such as snails and her plans to become a lady farmer when she grows up. Find out what happens when she is introduced to her new neighbour, Dawn, and see how Sophie copes when she is preparing to start full-time school.

Sophie's Tom
When Sophie reaches 5 years old, she is given a model farm with lots of animals, but what she wants more than anything is a real animal, a pet. Follow Sophie when she starts school, hear about the friends she makes and the situations which arise when she befriends a black cat and christens it Tom. Find out what happens when old Aunt Al intervenes and see what eventually happens to "Tom".

Sophie Hits Six
This story continues where Sophie's Tom leaves off. The family now have four kittens, Tom's kittens, and the problem is what to call the newly discovered mum. Sophie's time at school continues to be eventful and happy. She makes a new friend, a farming friend. Find out what happens to the kittens and Sophie's new pet Rabbit. Read about the preparations for Sports Day, the visit to an agricultural show, when Sophie gets lost, and Sophie's attempts to train her pet rabbit on a collar and lead. Enjoy her appearance in the infant nativity play and find out what happens on Christmas Day, Sophie's Birthday, when the whole family get a wonderful present. What might it be?

Sophie in the Saddle
This begins with the arrival of a puppy on Sophie's sixth birthday, and although intended for the whole family, is christened Puddle by Sophie. So begins her attempts to train the dog and the subsequent introduction to her other animals. Find out how Sophie gets stuck in the "Duck Muck" and how she learns to swim. The summer holidays arrive, and the family travels to Cornwall, to stay on a farm. Imagine Sophie's dismay when she discovers Dawn, her neighbour from home who is not at all liked, on the beach! Riding lessons begin and Sophie has lots of fun.

Sophie is Seven
"In the fifth story from this master storyteller ... Sophie is even more incredible than before in her ideas, her witty replies, and her determination ... children will, of course, love it"--The Junior Bookshelf This quote says it all: Sophie visits a farm, she becomes an excellent actress in the school play, she celebrates her seventh birthday and, above all, begins riding lessons.

Sophie's Lucky
"Funny and a little sad too, this is the sixth and final book about animal-loving Sophie". Sophie's exploits continue. She becomes engaged to her farming friend, Andrew, (on her instructions, needless to say!) her pet rabbit disappears, so discover how he is saved. Read her Sophie's exploits on "OWN-A-PONY-DAY" and her longing for the summer visit to Aunt Al in Scotland. Find out what happens after the family receive sad news and see how all their lives change.

"Six linked stories which are ideal for reading aloud sessions ... Sophie's fascination with small creatures will entertain all."--Child Education

"Rich in humour, with a tremendous understanding of what makes small children tick"--Susan Hill, Sunday Times

Review

"The doughty little heroine is a wonderful creation, and David Parkins' illustrations capture her, and the rest of her family, beautifully." Books For Keeps

King-Smith has captured the mind set of all young children with his wonderful stories about Sophie. The stories are gentle tales of a youngster facing the day to day perils of older brothers, pets, starting school, whilst maintaining her ambition to 'be a lady farmer when she grows up'.
The friendship that develops between Sophie and her Great Aunt Al is charming without losing the realism of old age, and all parents will be reassured by the matter of fact, yet totally understanding, chapter where Aunt Al passes away. My daughter, aged six, has been so captivated with the stories that we have now read them, two chapters a night, for the second time. Jenna can imitate Sophies 'your'e mowldy, stupid and assive you are!' fantastically! We are now buying our own copies ready for the next session!
No parent will be making a mistake choosing these books for children between 5 and 7 as a bedtime story. But the text is straightforward without being childish, so making them ideal as starter books for Yr1/Yr2 readers.
So my recommendation? Buy them and enjoy!!

Sophie is better than Junie B. Jones! 7 Sep 2005
By Carol S. Shull Hluchy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you love Junie B. Jones you should love Sophie's escapades. If you like books your child can relate to, but want words and grammar to be correct examples of the English language, then you will love Sophie. There are times that Sophie uses a 4-year-old's way of spelling but as she gets older she corrects her mistakes.

Dick King-Smith uses several phrases that may be less familiar to American English readers but, the context makes the meanings clear. If you have read the book or have seen the movie, "Babe" you know King-Smith's fondness for animals and this series is more of the same. I read these books to my four and five-year old students at rest time and they loved them.
magic story for young girls 11 Sep 2009

We stumbled across these books while on holiday in Scotland... read them to my 7 year old daughter who absolutely adored them. A real find!! Only wish there were more...
Shipping is a PROBLEM! 9 April 2006
By T. Ramirez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My daughter absolutely loved Sophie - when we discovered her books in Singapore and Sri Lanka during a recent trip. She is indeed the British version of Junie B. The only problem with this order, via Amazon, is that I have placed this order in December and each month Amazon is stating that it will be the next month before it ships out. Now the order is due to ship out mid-May!! You will have to disregard Amazon's claim of shipping within 4-6 weeks if ordering this. But Sophie is so worth it!
