Hilarious! 30 July 2013

The complete short stories of James Purdy is 'like a drug one can never get enough of. He makes us light-headed. High. Even sick. Overdosing on James Purdy's stories is a new kind of excitement. And not a bad way to die, either.'
And here they all are at last with an hilarious Introduction by John Waters!

JAMES PURDY'S MID-20TH CENTURY AMERICAN GOTHIC 19 Sep 2013
By Ron Burns - Published on Amazon.com

How this happens escapes me, but these dark (even, dare I say, twisted) stories of so-called "ordinary people" are often drizzled with humor. They really do, at times, make you laugh out loud. And this is good, because Purdy's work is assaultive. It penetrates your head. It takes you places you don't expect to go, maybe don't want to go. And that's great for me, because I'm looking to be pushed by what I read, maybe like the proverbial envelope. Others have to decide for themselves if the bumpy ride is worth the journey. In my opinion, in almost every case among the many stories (56 in all) in this book, the payoff is more than worth the fare.

IT IS A PLEASURE TO HAVE THIS COLLECTION OF STORIES BY JAMES PURDY. ALTHOUGH I OWN MANY OF THEM IN THEIR ORIGINAL PRINTINGS, SOME IN BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EDITIONS, I AM HAPPY TO HAVE THIS COMPLETE COLLECTION IN ONE VOLUME. THANK YOU.

Best of the Little Knowns 4 Sep 2013
By Jacqueline Rodriguez - Published on Amazon.com

I read a story about Purdy after reading a story about him in the New York Times. I've been a lifelong reader and yet I'd never heard of him. I am thrilled with my "discovery" of his writings. His writing is crisp, clear, deep, with well-written characters and scenes. I immediately bought this collection of short stories (my favorite type of story) and can't read them fast enough. i cannot tell you how great I think this writer is, and I'm sad that he isn't more well known. He is a gem and his writing is lovely.
I tried to like it, but... 25 Oct 2014

I guess I don't get it. These stories don't seem to have an ending or much of a middle for that matter.. Perhaps there is much left for the reader to contemplate and I am not sharp enough to understand. To be fair, I only read four stories before taking the book off of my ipad.
