One of the Beeb's greatest achievements.Every short story and the novels too are brought to life in beautifully dramatised productions that can be listened to again and again.Technically stop notch with sublime sound.
Clive Merrison is "interesting" as Holmes playing him slightly too manic but the late Michael Williams is simply the best Watson that there has ever been. His vocal performance is so perfect with the bumbling oaf being replaced by a man of honour, dignity and love. Some of the stories on closer examination don't stand up but that was always one of the joys of them. Highlights include "The Devil's Foot";"The Second Stain";"The Crooked Man";"The Dying Detective", "The Boscombe Valley Mystery and my personal favourite(sorry to be so unoriginal)"The Empty House".Of the novels "A Study in Scarlet" is wonderfully done.

Not only did the BBC team manage to dramatise the entire canon of Holmes stories, they did a fantastic job on each episode. All the performances are wonderful, the scripts are brilliant and full of humour and the sound effects and production allow you to conjure up Victorian London in your living room. The chemistry between the two leads, Clive Merrison and Michael Williams, means that at last we have a Holmes and Watson who are faithful to the books. With this set you can follow the two friends from their famous meeting in a laboratory at Bart's all the way through to Holmes' retirement, taking in their many strange adventures along the way...

Atmospheric, outstanding performances!,

This is an outstanding collection. Both Clive Merrison (Holmes) and Michael Williams (Watson) bring these characters to life like never before, with both wit and drama. You will chuckle out loud at Watsons dry remarks during Holmes frustrating periods and his asides are either excellently scripted or inspired add libs. Merrison as Holmes captures the character throughout the series and it is a study in character acting as Holmes journeys from his first case to his final bow, allowing Holmes at times to be more than human. The real winners though are excellent scripts, direction and superb supporting casts who should not be underestimated in their contribution. Charles Augustus Milverton, The Final Problem, the Empty House & the Speckled Band are great examples. Finally the atmosphere created with the excellent effects transport the listener to the scene with clarity. If quality is what you are after you will not be disappointed. This is the entire Conan-Doyle collection and includes The Hound of the Baskervilles. Brilliant!!
