Book Description

4 Oct 2004 Radio Collection
Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective is one of the most enduringly popular sleuths of all time. It is with great pride that the "BBC Radio Collection" has been able to publish, for what we believe to be the first time on audio, all the Arthur Conan Doyle stories and novels featuring Holmes and Watson. Our eighteen-volume series has the consistency of the same team of directors, producers, dramatisers and leading actors - Clive Merrison as Holmes and Michael Williams as Watson. Acclaim for the series has been widespread: "A remarkable undertaking - the dramatisation of all 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories. Applauding them, and particularly Clive Merrison's Holmes, made my hands sore." - Peter Davalle, "The Times". This box set, containing all eighteen volumes, is a highly collectable item for the many devotees of Sherlock Holmes.

About the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) started to write as a doctor, whilst waiting for patients to arrive. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). The Holmes stories soon attracted such a following that Conan Doyle felt the character overshadowed his other work. In The Final Problem (1893) Conan Doyle killed him off, but was obliged by public demand to restore the detective to life. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother! 11 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
There are no illustrations but that is not the main problem. The main problem is the Americanisation. These books are classics but they have been mangled for the American market. Wherever there should be a reference to brandy it has been changed to whiskey and soda, bacon and eggs has become ham and eggs plus all the appalling American spellings. Can't they leave anything alone!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing version of a great book 29 Aug 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book with great excitement as one of the first books for my new Kindle. The stories themselves are fantastic and don't need any review from me. However, I was very disappointed in the quality of the Kindle edition. There are lines missing and at one point where there should be a diagram, there is, instead, an advertisement for a Kindle edition of the complete works of Jane Austen. It's a shame that something so shoddy should be on sale. If it was an actual book I would've returned it. Get your finger out Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comments for Kindle users 22 Jan 2011

This is excellent. All four long stories and all five collections of short stories are here. Importantly for a Kindle edition, from the contents page you can go directly to any story long or short and even to any chapter of each of the four long stories. In effect the whole canon of Holmes stories at your finger tips.

I have greatly enjoyed reading through the Holmes canon, but the editing leaves something to be desired. However the edition was free and so I will not complain more.
