Review

No translation of the Scrolls is either more readable or more authoritative than that of Vermes (John J. Collins The Times Higher Education Supplement)

Fascinating, not least because of Geza Vermes' wonderful introduction and translation (Justin Cartwright Daily Telegraph, Books of the Year)

Product Description

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Judaean desert between 1947 and 1956 transformed our understanding of the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism and the origins of Christianity. These extraordinary manuscripts appear to have been hidden in the caves at Quumran by members of the Essene community, a Jewish sect in existence before and during the time of Jesus. Some sixty years after the Scrolls' first discovery, this revised and much expanded edition of The Dead Sea Scrolls in English crowns a lifetime of research by the great Qumran scholar Geza Vermes.

As well as superb translations of all non-biblical texts sufficiently well preserved to be rendered into English, there are also a number of previously unpublished texts, and a new preface.

Since its first publication in 1962, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English has established itself as the standard English translation of the non-Biblical Qumran Scrolls and as giving an astonishing insight to the organization, customs, history and beliefs of the community responsible for them. This seventh edition will contain new material, together with extensive new introductory material and notes.

brilliant compilation of the meaning of the scrolls - maybe some of the translation is a bit boring but then that is everyday life then and now

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT the complete DSS 26 Jun 2013
By S. Schrecker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How disappointing for the venerable Penguin to mislead us with this title. The DSS Bible books are not here in this collection. Only the non-biblical DSS are here. Fine...as long as you tell us, which you didn't. One might cynically believe the title was chosen for marketing strength, not honesty concerning the contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtfull and complete collection of the Discovery. 19 Nov 2012
By Ramon Antonio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have started using TCDSSE and find it a most valuable resource for my study comparisons of texts and versions of antique writings and the Bible. Having seen other compilations available, I really think that this one is most valuable and indispensable, a reference for all sake. Specially useful are the multiple comments on the thoughts that the editor took guidance for the rendering of meaning of complex, incomplete or obscure parts. This I find illuminating for these comments present the actual "as is" condition of the find, the available clues for deciphering and the decision made to render what the author deems the best translation. The decision to insert these comments throughout the book is one of the most useful tools I find in this book. A triumph!

5.0 out of 5 stars Translation of the DSS materials 22 Dec 2012
By Dr. Karen M. Gray - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Vermes' work is a superb resource for those with a general interest in the non-Biblical DSS material. While diverse scholars will always vary in readings and translations, it appears to me that Vermes has come close to the ideal for a popular edition such as this. I appreciate his care to make it clear when he completes texts with readings from multiple sources, is filling in readings that may be missing but are extremely certain, and to leave incomplete what simply is not knowable. I'm grateful to Vermes and Penguin for making this work so readily available and especially for putting it in Kindle format.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great buy... 19 Mar 2013
By Jann Carr-Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was an excellent buy. This is the complete dead sea scrolls in English. By complete, it means that everything that was found in the caves has been translated as far as the condition of the scrolls was able to be translated. But what is translated is a great find and gives great insight into otherwise lost texts. If you want to study them, this is a great book to use as a tool, along with other tools.
