Product Description

The supreme violinist of his generation – declared a talent “born once in a hundred years” by his first teacher – Maxim Vengerov both embodies and renews the great Russian tradition in the mastery of his instrument. This comprehensive collection – with Rostropovich, Abbado, Barenboim and Pappano among his partners – documents Vengerov’s achievements over the first decade-and-a-half of his international career. As the New York Times wrote of his Sibelius: “Not even Heifetz ... achieved the fevered pitch that stamps Mr. Vengerov's performance from end to end.”

Because I live in Perth, West Australia, one of the most isolated cities in the World, I had not heard of Maxim Vengerov, the violinist. I wondered who he was after I came across this box set. So I read some of the Amazon reviews. He was called a master; that looked promising. Another wrote, that he was the best violinist in the world today. I really was impressed. Then, a reviewer was disappointed. Appearently his latest CD was not as good as his last. In fact, he tore a strip off this violinist. Not so good. Yet another stated, that he was given a few bad reviews because he dares to experiment and plays the concerto in a different manner. He is a risk taker, not like those violinists who do not dare to tread a new path. Well, if a violinist can create such passion, then he must have something.(READ MY CD REVIEWS BELOW) This new box set has had no reviews in two months. Generally, I like to review these type of sets or bluray's, because they turn out being a cut above the average and they are a challenge to get readers interested in them.

Who is Vengerov? Firstly, I will start by saying that after listening to all these CDs, that he has a superb technique. With a highly individualistic and large sound, which he can reduce to almost a whisper, pulsating with sheer emotion, at times almost heartbreakingly so. Secondly, to understand the man we require some history. For without understanding the past, how can we come to terms with the present.

In 1868 Leopold Auer took over from Wieniawski as professor of violin at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and established a prestigious violin school there whose influence spread to the West from the turn of the 20th century onwards.

Vengerov remains arguably the greatest male violinist of the last fifteen years or so and I don't intend to comment on the performances. All have been issued before, often frequently, to generally high acclaim, in my opinion justified. Self evidently this is the best way to acquire his entire opus for Teldec and EMI (11 to 8 cds), both now Warner. There's also a 2005 documentary on dvd 'Maxim Vengerov - Living the Dream', made for Granada in the UK.

For prospective purchasers it worthwhile noting that this is an 'original covers' issue, but as all his works come from the modern era, the CDs are fulsomely stocked running-time wise. There is however very little information provided, none on the music and a slim article on Vengerov himself by Jean-Michel Molkhou. This is bit of a shame as there is a lot more that could be said in a definitive collection and for that reason alone I deny it one star.

Being a pedant, I think there is at least one Teldec piece he recorded which is not included. His Thais Méditation appeared only on a number of highlights discs and thus I guess got omitted as all the contents here are his original 'albums'. However, his EMI recording of the same piece is there.
