I'm a vet - well, I used to be - now I do other things, but am still involved in dog training. For years, I've been telling people to buy 'Don't Shoot the Dog'. Having read this, I'll be changing - or at least telling the new/prospective puppy owners to try both together. DSTD is still seminal, but this is one of the best, most useful, coherent books I've ever read on the subject. Every possible angle of dog training is covered in straight forward steps, with plausible examples which should give even the uncertain dog owner an idea of how to train their dog along intelligent scientific lines without resorting to sadism, force, thoughtless violence or the old, disproven methods of dog training. It's brilliant. If you want just one book to help you train your dog, this is the one.

This is a great book to guide you through building a great relationship with your dog and training him / her without punishment...... I bought it when I got my lurcher puppy and have read and re-read it and worked through the whole book with her..... she is a sensitive dog and definitely would not have responded to harsh words or manhandling (I don't ever have to move her around to teach her something) - we now do obedience and I do believe she enjoys and understands what is required of her because of the training methods in this book. Its easy to read - cover to cover - it keeps you riveted, easy to follow and explains in simple terms with reminders so it stays in the brain! I really can't recommend this book highly enough!

This book has lots of really good stuff in it BUT.... you have to wade through the first third - telling you why you shouldn't shout at your dog or beat it - before you get to the things you really want to know. I would have thought a few pages on why positive training works would have been enough - but perhaps Americans are harsher with their dogs than we are. The second two thirds of the book are great - although perhaps better for people taking on an older dog than a puppy (the crucial bits on house-training and puppy biting are hidden away near the end after lots of quite high level training. Your puppy will have made a lot of puddles and chewed your fingers off before you find them!). Would be a really good book to get with a rescue dog or perhaps for later training.
