I found this book to be the best course for learning Portuguese from scratch, right up to intermediate level. There is plenty audio material to accompany the book, and you really ought to have the CD's - you won't get far in any language without building up your listening skills.

The units are self-contained and structured well. I found this to be a great course and progressed through it quickly.

There is a good mix of European and Brazilian Portuguese and the differences are highlighted in the book so you needn't worry about getting it 'wrong' if you're travelling any time soon.

You can get this as an e-book with integrated audio, but if you prefer a hard copy then this is perfect. It's also available as a box set with the CD's included. You can always play the discs at home or copy them to mp3 and store them to play on your phone or ipod, or stream from the cloud etc.

I'd have opted for all-digital, but when it comes to learning there's nothing like an old-fashioned paper copy to be able to pencil in your notes and answers to go back to at a future date.

Altogether this is a great starting point and you can be flexible as you please with your audio setup to go along with it.

Love it !

This book takes you from the very basic in the first 6 lessons, to the Common European Framework Level B2, which means that you can interact with fluency and spontaneity with native speakers. You can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue. They teach you European and Brazilian Portuguese.
From the start, they present you with four voices, male from Portugal and female from Portugal, then a male from Brazil and a female from Brazil. They are distinctive enough for you to make the choice.
The lessons are presented by little chunks of audio (talked in the four voices). There are exercises which give you additional words as well. The sixth lesson is a revision. This sixth lesson makes sure you can start interact with people, slowly.
The audio consists of two discs. The first has lessons, the second has on top of lessons, a thorough explanation of how to sound the Portuguese sounds, differentiating the Brazilian from the European one. I was pleased for instance to hear the difference between vovó (grand ma) and vovô (grandpa).
The voices are warm. I feel like returning to them, so I can hear the sweet Portugal sounds which I prefer. There is enough grammar so you can understand how to build sentences. It is a good, through course. Yes, you have to work with it. But you won't be disappointed to embark on this kind of study. Portuguese has this gentle appeal that you won't want to forget. The people on the audio become your friends. And they never tire to repeat if you need it!
Good audio matching thoroughly the lessons with precise numbering so you know which exercise you are doing; example 'CD1, TR 27;Exercise 5.4.3 They say it in English on disc too.
It is a conscientious approach to befriend Portuguese. Worth doing. Highly recommended.

The major problem with this book is that it is heavily reliant on the CDs - available separately. If you do not have the CDs the book is not very useful and actually quite awkward to use even if you have the CDs (impossible with tablets and phones)

There is an edition available for IOS devices in which the audio is integrated with the text - no external CD required. This would be the edition to get. Unfortunately I have Android and PC devices,

Pointless ebook conversion.needs to be used in parallel with a CD reader.
So hardly handy on a plane for example. Verb Tables on 2 pages and useless as such.
Thank god v. cheap as a waste of money.
