1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing mix 25 Feb. 2013
By Stina
Format:Paperback
I bought this course because I want to learn European portugese. I found it quite useless, due to the mix of european and brazilian portugese. It's hard enough for beginners to learn one of the versions, and here it's mixed with brazilian and european portugese within the same dialogues. That makes it harder to learn and remember new words and phrases. It's also difficult to use the audio alone, for instance in the car, because you need the book to keep track of what's brazilian and what's european. I ended up buying another course.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thorough but confusing 6 Oct. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I recently decided to take up learning European Portuguese, but found that most learning materials seem geared towards the Brazilian version. I bought this on the strength of its reviews. It is well laid out with short exercises to test your knowledge. However I find the mix of Portuguese and Brazilian dialogues confusing. Having learnt a bit of Spanish in the past I am struggling with pronounciation, and would have much preferred all dialogues to be in the European version, with more repetition. It is better that 'Collins Speak Portuguese' though, which has inaccurate phonetic transcriptions, and lots of words and phrases that you don't have the chance to listen too.

If anyone anyone can recommend a European Only course, with accurate phonetic transcriptions, and plenty of audio material to listen to, please let me know.

I had been looking for a European Portuguese course and most of the courses I found in Amazon were for Brazilian Portuguese - which is quite a bit different from European Portuguese, particularly in the pronunciation. The majority of European Portuguese courses are very basic and I had already completed the Linguaphone PDQ course and wanted something that went further into the language. The description of 'Teach Yourself Complete Portuguese' sounded ideal - it promised to take one to CEF level B2 (A level standard). It covers the same grammar and vocabulary over a similar number of units to the Linguaphone Portuguese Complete CD course, but cost 20 something pounds, as opposed to the £200 of the Linguaphone course. On a positive note it does cover the main grammar and offers a good range of vocabulary. the author obviously knows what she is talking about and explains things well with lots of examples. She also includes cultural information.
On a negative note the book offers a confusing mix of European and Brazilian Portuguese and I can't image learners of either type of Portuguese being satisfied. It is very frustrating as a false beginner/elementary level student who is struggling with difficult sounds of Portuguese to be given two very different pronuncations of the same word. There are so many Brazilian Portuguese courses on offer it would have been good if Manuela Cook had written this as a European Portuguese course. My other major complaint is that the course promises to take one to B2 but the level of vocabulary in the later reading texts never reach that level and the exercises are very simple right up to the last unit.

Should make it 100% clear that the audio/video doesn't work on Android devices, or indeed on anything apart from two specific Kindles, iPhones and iPads. The only warning is in 8-point text, below the cover image. In particular the more prominent "available on these devices" gives a long list of devices saying it will work on them, and it doesn't on most.

3.0 out of 5 stars European OR Brazilian ?? 9 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wanted to learn some basic language to use in PORTUGAL
It is confusing to have the mixture of both European as well as Brazilian
Would have been less confusing = easier to learn if this were produced as 2 separate versions .
Or especially for the recordings if there was an option to choose which voices to be played.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings 28 Nov. 2013
By AlanC
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Verified Purchase
It worked well on the my Kindle Fire and the audio content being embedded in the text is very good. I couldn't pause the audio though which meant when there was a word I couldn't remember the meaning of, I had to look it up, restart the audio and then try and locate where I had got to. The Teach Yourself part is generally okay though as others have commented the Brazilian part is a distraction. From the enhanced ebook view more thought should have been given into the breakdown of the contents - something trivial such as looking up a number of words in Portuguese-English dictionary becomes very laborious - they should have considered an alphabetic breakdown.

Also, the download to my Microsoft Surface device simply failed with no proper error message. I appreciate that it is not a common platform but at least give developers a fighting chance of working out issues by giving a meaningful message.
