To me learning Portuguese is a hobby and the layout of this course is spot on for what I need. The course is divided into modules and at each stage you learn a bit of everything you are likely to need your Portuguese for - shopping, restaurant, accommodation, meeting people and so on. This is very helpful.
Also impressive is the help given with the sound side of the language. You'll find pronunciation notes in the units, a pronunciation and spelling guide at the end of the book, and a choice of four voices to model your own accent on.
I'm very happy to recommend this course.

I am really a beginner in Portuguese and thought that a complete course would not be for me, but took advantage of the Look Inside facility and read the How to Use This Book pages. The step by step approach looked good and I am now using the book. I have gone through units 1-6 which promise to give you a get by package, and I can confirm that is true. I have put it to work in my recent visit to Portugal and I managed to communicate successfully.

Pluses: Superb course in structure, vocabulary choice, number and variety of practice and self-testing exercises, and extra help in the way of summaries, insight boxes and above all 'handy hints' boxes. The best!
Minuses: Just one, in the audio. In the dialogues European and Brazilian speakers interact. Having both accents is a good idea but it would be much better if we had two separate audiotapes, one with the Brazilian voices and the other with the European voices. This way you could concentrate on one accent at a time.
