Product Description

Product Description

This volume contains everything Brendan Behan wrote in dramatic form in English Contains the three famous full-length plays: The Quare Fellow, set in an Irish prison ("In Brendan Behan's tremendous new play language is out on a spree, ribald, dauntless and spoiling for a fight ...with superb dramatic tact, the tragedy is concealed beneath layer after layer of rough comedy" Observer); The Hostage, set in a Dublin lodging-house of doubtful repute where a young English soldier is being kept prisoner, "shouts, sings, thunders and stamps with life...a masterpiece" (The Times); and Richard's Cork Leg, set in a graveyard, "a joyous celebration of life" (Guardian). The volume also contains three one-act plays, originally written for radio and all intensely autobiographical, Moving Out, A Garden Party and The Big House.

Behan was a genius shame about the quality of the print in this book. The book is well bound and looks and feels alright but the text is blurry and it basically seems like it is a bound multiple generation scan of an original text. In fact on one page there are barely legible hand written notes. This makes it quite unpleasant to read as many of the letters are blobs of ink and run into each other.

There is a letter included in the introduction that is near impossible to read and is worse that the page on the look inside here which is from a what seems to be the first edition rather than this reissue.

The man deserves better.

review of The Quare Fellow 11 Jun 2005
By Audrey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This review is of the first play in the book, The Quare Fellow.

I highly recommend The Quare Fellow, the first play in the collection. I would like to see it performed. Behan's writing skills are comparable to those of Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes: first rate.

I am not reviewing the entire collection because I haven't read it due to time limitations.
