Product Description

Product Description

The book takes a comprehensive approach to the complex process of Planting Design. It shows how to choose and combine plants for specific effects: for year-round colour and interest; for drama and movement; and to overcome site difficulties. From initial vision to finished planting, the book clearly explains the practical steps, considerations, opportunities and decisions that need to be taken. This process can be applied to readers' own gardens, and it will also allow them to take their skills further into other people's gardens.

About the Author

Hilary Thomas has lectured in Garden Design at the highly-regarded Capel Manor Horticultural College in London, UK. She has been designing gardens for 15 years and teaching students the essential techniques for 12 years since establishing the first planting design course at Capel Manor. As a complete planting amateur going on to a Landscape Architecture course I really couldn't have asked for more. I think the index tells the story very well, and a good story it is.

I have read it from cover to cover (although I have a chapter left) and this book has taught me:
- the holistic thinking behind planting
- the different styles of planting
- how to think simplistically
- how to confidently design my own planting plan
- how to communicate my idea well visually and how to annotate it
- the thought pattern behind latin names and how to find the plant you're looking for
- and superbly enough the last chapter is about professionalism, very clever

As a summary is goes from the detail to the overall thinking, it gives you appreciation for the leaf or petal but also its role in a large public space - texture, poetry and practicality. Additionally, the author (Hilary Thomas) is very down to earth and makes the topic less overwhelming.

Brilliant!!

Must have design book 13 Jan 2012
By Niem
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book after looking in to many reviews, I have started a garden design course and needed to get some books on the subject. This is written with a design course in mind, the photos are inspiring and the information contained in these pages is excellent, what makes this book stand out is the fact that it concentrates on the use of plants in design rather than hard landscape features, it looks at colours, textures plant shape, and guides you through the whole process of garden design it has design ideas for almost every combination of garden type you would come across, It even has a chapter on law, and business start up. This is a book I will be dipping back into for years to come.
