Product Description

From the Author

The most comprehensive guide to the Pilates Method ever
The most comprehensive guide to the Pilates method available I "stumbled" upon the Pilates Method almost 20 years ago and it fixed a chronic back problem I had from a rugby accident. I was an instant convert and changed careers to enter this fascinating arena. Coming from an athletic background brought a different perspective to the ballet-dominant field of Pilates. With this different insight I "created" a series of formulas and rules with which to perform the exercises, including those for breathing, progressing the exercises and how to guage your results, amongst others.

The exercises themselves are "more complete than any other book that is available on the market today" (writes the Physicalmind Institute, a training centre for Pilates Instructors). There are guidelines to what is the appropriate exercise for you, how to sequentially perform the movements and what to do if you find it a struggle.

There are sections on specific areas of the body: lower back pain, tight shoulders, knees, etc. There are charts at the back of the book with recommendations of 6 different levels of exercises to choose from and an order form to order any of the seven videos based on the book - including two exclusive ones: Pilates for Athletes and Pre-natal Pilates.

I had a great time writing this book and was thrilled to learn that people all over the world were using it as an instructors manual as well as obtaining relief from back pain by using the specific techniques contained therein, especially the innovative "B-Line" for lower abdominal connections. Prior to its launch in the USA, this book was selling worldwide from my studios in Australia and via our internet site. I was amazed at the sales...

Please give your honest comments, they would be greatly appreciated.

The most comprehensive account of the Pilates method that I have come across - and I have ALL the books, being an avid Pilates fanatic for many years.
Coming from a sporting background, I found the other pilates books to ballet-orientated and 'flimsy' for me. I needed something strong that would cater for my athletic ability and to fix a niggling back problem. The theory is great. I am no fool, but this book opened my eyes on posture and alignment I had not encountered before. The section on the "B-Line" for abdominal control is different to all previous theories I have encountered, including physical therapy. A boon to stabilizing the lower back. Packed with formulas and diagrams, this is more a teachers handbook, but great for those wanting to know more about their own bodies. The exercises are clearly described for all levels and the 6 charts at the back of the book assist you in doing a home program. The companion videos for lower back pain and beginners are also great.
My recommendation? Get one and compare, you won't be sorry you did!

This book is written in a very clear and precise manner, and covers all aspects of Pilates exercises. It is a very comprehensive and well thought out book. I was amazed at just how much is actually contained in just one book! Many topics are covered, including an indepth chapter on the origins of pilates and the way in which the muscles of the body work. This is followed by beginner, intermediate, advanced and extra exercise sections. The range of exercises covered is very extensive. Throughout the book, the text provides clear and comprehensive instuctions on how to perform every exercise. The pictures are also more helpful than in some of the books I have seen. This book is definately one of the best! There is also a section towards the end on Theraband exercises, and how to overcome specific problems such as weak knees etc.. I vote this an excellent book for anyone wishing to have a thorough and complete introduction to the Pilates Method.

Format: Paperback
This work is a good introduction for those who know nothing about Pilates or the anatomy/physiology of posture. Solid introductory chapters (I found the illustrations to be an irritance more than a help) and fairly clear photos and descriptions. As with my review for The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler, this is best used in conjunction with other works (i.e. Siler and Michael King) who use some different exercises. Of course, they all use the majority of the same techniques, but in Pilates interpretation is everything; you have to work out what's best for you. This book can help do that.

I have had this book before many years ago and was delighted to see that even with the change in cover the content was the same.
For any Pilates instructors out there this book gives numerous Pilates exercises up to advanced and is a must buy.
