5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of Brahms piano music! 17 Aug 2011

I have to fully concur with the above reviewer. The Brahms piano music in this set is truly wonderful. Modern performances with excellent sound!

Although the names of the players are not household, do not let that deter you from purchasing this set. The performances are powerful.

Of note, Brilliant Classics has issued a different version of Brahms piano piano sonatas 2 & 3 with Alan Weiss. This package includes Helene Grimaud. The packaging is different but available here on Amazon.

I really enjoy these pieces, particularly the Piano Sonata No. 1, Paganini and Handel variations, Brahms late pieces (my favorite Intermezzi are op. 117), Scherzo and Ballades.

In fact, I enjoy this version of the Paganini variations more than Kissin's famous account. There is more poetic beauty (but fire when called for) in this account than Kissin's.

However, I would give Perahia the edge on the Handel Variations. But, this account by Wolfram Schmitt is still excellent.

The Brahms late pieces played by Hakon Austbo are movingly beautiful on par with Gould's version of these pieces but in much better sound here. Perahia is also very good here.

The 2 Hungarian Rhapsodies played here need more fire and passion and I would give Gould the edge here.

Piano Sonata No. 1 is wonderfully played and energetic by Kamerhan Turan. I still think however that the Piano sonatas 2 and 3 are best played by Julius Katchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 22 Sep 2007
By C. Strand - Published on Amazon.com
This CD set is an absolute joy, and at a fantastic price. I would recommend this box set over any of the other Brahms Complete Piano sets. A terrific bargain, and all great performances. Not to mention Brahms himself was just a genius. All recent recording too.

Just great.
