Product Description

Review

This beautiful book is a pleasure to peruse and would be a great present for any craft lover. (Westmorland Gazette )

The definitive sourcebook and practical guide to this craft, written by one of the world's foremost practitioners in the field. (English Garden )

Howarth's book may well inspire you to design a pebble mosaic or two for your own garden. It'll certainly make you look more closely and appreciate any mosaics you come across. (Scotsman )

Perhaps it's because the individual building blocks of a pebble mosaic are so small and manageable, or perhaps it's because Maggy Howarth makes the process seem exclusive and yet achievable, I defy anyone to read this book and not come away with the itch to have a go for themselves. (Professional Gardener )

Something completely different, and made me wish there were more hours in the day to take up this fascinating craft. (Let's Talk )

Review

Pebble mosaic is slowly gaining in popularity with books and workshops springing up across the country. Whether it is the tactile quality of pebbles or the finished work of art, its organic quality appeals to today's more natural tastes. Go to a beach and you will find a diverse range of pebbles depending on the area of the country you are in: elliptical, strip-like, round; striped, muted, vibrant and more. A discerning eye can soon disseminate between them, breaking them down further to differing sizes and thus begins the art of pebble mosaic, with a sharp eye catching a first glimpse of a possible "star" for their design. Maggy Howarth, a well-known and respected pebble mosaicist, has travelled the world researching her art and here successfully collates all her information into an inspiring, informative collection of designs. Lavishly illustrated she covers ancient Italian wall mosaics, the stunning modern geometrics of the Praca do Municipio in Lisbon, Portugal to flowers, animals, birds and fish in all manner of designs, all intermingling to offer ideas for every taste and situation. This is a must for all enthusiasts of the medium, offering both practical and design advice on the subject. - Lucy Watson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This beautifuly illustrated book contains pictures and ideas from all over the world. The book is organised into three well designed sections, covering first the "core techniques", then "around the world" and lastly a "gazetteer of design ideas".

The first section shows you everything Maggy has learned about making these beautiful artworks over the years and how to apply that to your own designs. Secondly Maggy shows you her own work, and that of all the other artists she has contact with from over the world; including ancient works from China, Europe and America. Then Lastly all the various design ideas are collated into an easy to browse section which is invaluable as a work reference.

The appendices contain contact details for all the other artists who are featured, details on where to find all the hundreds of works featured in the book as well as an index.

Maggy has Generously given a great many artists' work exposure here as well as giving the rest of us everything we would need to begin making our own designs except the pebbles.

This is a lovely book to have, whether on the coffee table or in the workshop.

Just a quick comment - I've seen other pebble mosaic books and this really does seem like the bible. Other people I know who've actually made mosaics (rather than drooled at the pictures like me) say the same. Probably not worth looking elsewhere - just get this; she really knows her stuff.

Yeah! Great! 6 April 2008
Format:Hardcover
Even though I'm not really into pepple mosaic I found this book great! For me it contained ideas and inspiration for ordinary mosaics. I think I like the style of pebble mosaic and I defenitely like the style Maggy Howarth picks, even though her book contains a wide range of motifs. Ther book is divided to 3 parts: the first is core technique where she thoroughly describes techniqes wit examples. Second is a chapter with pepple mosaics around the world, both classical and contemporary. Third is a long chapter with splendid photos (well the whole book contains splendid photos) for inspiration. I ca ndefintely recommend this book!
