The course is generally very good but best to warn prospective learners of Mandarin that the foundations of pronunciation and tonal system are not really covered.

The few pages found in 'Introduction' are all that are available to give the student a grounding in what is going to the bewildering encounter with the tone system of Chinese and a selection of consonants never heard in any European language. The latter have about a centimeter of text and a single track on the CD, the two unfortunately not matching. One supposes that the idea is that the student will pick up the tones and sounds during the course of the dialogues however I am very much aware that things such as this learned incorrectly through lack of proper tuition in the beginning are massively more difficult to correct at a later stage. It is difficult not to feel that the book has been slightly "dumbed down" as this kind of preliminary study is hard work and not particularly interesting.

For those who would in fact like to get this firm foundation, the FSI Chinese course online covers pronunciation and tones in depth and proves an invaluable resource to accompany the initial chapters of this book.

Apart from the negative comments above, the book is well thought out with an excellent progression of dialogues and good explanations of the use of specific words and the social contexts in which they are used.

I couldn't say more wonderful things about this book. It's well organized and teaches practical Mandarin I can use in real life. Simply put, I was so glad I had studied with this book when travelling in China and Taiwan.

My only wish for the publisher is that they make "Perfect Your Mandarin Chinese" to top off the five-level series. If I'm not mistaken, currently, the "Perfect Your ..." series is only available for Spanish (European), French and Italian. Teach Yourself should be the first bold one to publish an advanced-level course in Mandarin (which, by the way, is not always easy to come by since most courses teaching Mandarin seem to be for beginning and intermediate students) to meet the ever-rising demand in Mandarin Chinese in the Anglophone world. That would be my only request for the publisher. Thank you.

I recommend and love this course. OK it got me kicked out of Chinese classes (in Hong Kong )for being disruptive and introducing new words into the class, but for me that shows the disruptive power of language. I used it to go down the markets and practice with the mainlanders(this was pre 1997 handover) on their market stalls. They all used to complement me on my pronunciation (better than theirs they said as they were all native Cantonese speakers), so it really works effectively with the tapes, and it made learning the language such fun. The only problem (and it has nothing to do with Ms Scurfield's superb course), is that I used this so much as my vade mecum the book was falling apart and I was literally taping the pages back into the spine and had to buy at least 3 copies of the book - Teach Youself books do not stand up to daily wear.
