Book Description

Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women, Good Wives and the sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. The first part of Little Women: or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy (1868), is a semi-autobiographical account of her childhood with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Part two, or Part Second, also known as Good Wives (1869), followed the March sisters into adulthood and their respective marriages. Little Men (1871) detailed Jo's life at the Plumfield School that she founded with her husband Professor Bhaer at the conclusion of Part Two of Little Women. And Jo's Boys (1886) completed the "March Family Saga". Alcott made women’s rights integral to her stories, and her fiction became her “most important feminist contribution” — even considering all the efforts Alcott made to help facilitate women’s rights during her lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Women Series 19 May 2014

A little nostalgia and tales of fighting through against the odds is good for the soul. An excellent classic that still has the ability to inspire the next generation. I can recommend this to anyone that is sentimental, or has a young person in the family who reads well and wants to improve their vocabulary - so interesting that they will hardly notice that they are getting used to language of an earlier era.

4.0 out of 5 stars And my childhood returned 31 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These really are the most wonderful books, and if I hadn't read the Anne of Green Gables series I would have given them five stars. They are eloquently and enchantingly written, and a good, gentle, moral read. But I'm afraid Anne has the edge. So read this book first, because you won't lose any enjoyment, then read the Anne books.

5.0 out of 5 stars little women entire series 8 Nov. 2013
By kelly
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have always loved this book, and was intrigued into the sequels after watching the film. This book is amazing as it offers an un-edited entire collection from the beginning to the end. It may be a children's book, yes, but its so profound adults can easily enjoy it as much, if not more, than the target audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic 8 Sept. 2014
By LB
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A classic novel, what more needs to be said. I read this series as a teenager and recently revisited it. Fantastic for a teenage audience, not quite the same effect for a mature adult, however still tears and emotion at the ups and downs in the girls lives. Personally, I prefer Little Women and Good Wives to the later two of what happens to them after they get married and Jo's school for boys.

3.0 out of 5 stars too sweet! 23 Mar. 2015
By april
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
first book fine, lovely, well balanced, well paced, not too "preachy"..second book slowly sliding into anecdotal and disparate jerkiness...third book too "goody-goody", with no real pacing, except a straight time-line, and too tendentious and didactic...fourth book even worse, full of wishfulfillment dreams and sermons...all the protests about being good read as if it is really difficult, rather than pleasant, and it makes one wonder why anyone would bother...surely not the impression alcott wanted to make....all the live and care shown in the first book become diluted and worldly...too bad...read the first, cry a bit, and skip the rest!
