Format: Paperback
Although he is best remembered for his novels, D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) also produced some very expressive poetry. His early verse was written in mainly ballad form with simple rhyming scheme incorporating subjects Lawrence held close to him from his adolescence in Nottinghamshire. To be honest, I found some of his poems quite poor but perseverance pays off when one comes across a little gem! He wrote free-verse poems, many of which utilize animals and birds along with images of flowers which evoke a spiritual depth between nature and humanity.
His poem collections include: `Love Poems' (1913), `Amores' (1916), `Look! We have come through!' (1917), `New Poems' (1918), `Birds, Beasts and Flowers' (1923), `Pansies' (1929), `Nettles' (1930) and `Last Poems' (1932). The complete poems were published in three volumes in 1957 and I would say only Lawrence aficionados or genuine poetry lovers who can be a little forgiving will enjoy this book.

I bought this book after finding a copy of it on a shelf in school, I picked it up during French one Tuesday afternoon and really enjoyed it, I love all his poems about the roses, nature and just love in general, the poems are all so similar in some respects but completely diverse in others. My favourites have to include River Roses and Green as well as Moral Clothing. This is a definitive collection and one to be a part of anybody's collection.
I loathed French in school and thankfully, D H Lawrence helped me to survive.

First, I am reviewing the paperback edition that contains approximately 800 of Lawrence's poems. This seems like a complete collection to me, so I can only assume that the kindle version that reviewers complain about is at fault. (I could make a strong case that any kindle version sells you short because you do not get a physical book that you can enjoy handling, smelling, owning, etc. but maybe another time!)

This edition is amazingly cheap for a book that is 660 pages long, but the print and binding quality are excellent. So don't be put off by the other reviews or the price. And then of course there are the poems. Some outrageously bad, but at their best they are wonderful. If you want to start at the top go straight to "Snake" on p282.

Although I was not unfamiliar with some of Lawrence' poems, this edition of his 'complete poems' has convinced me that, at his best moments, he is a truly outstanding poet on top of being a gifted novelist and short story writer. The collection also has an excellent introduction to his poetry and is therefore highly commendable.
